In the case of the Cobra Commander card, I got the original image of CC, then repainted his uniform in photoshop.. (probably an easier way to do change his uniform color without all that work...but I dont know it yet) Then I put in the explosion back ground, painting and modifying it to fit the 25th card. Then I scanned in a 25th back, and designed the back to look the way I wanted it to. I used the Cobra Commander on the front of the Cobra Legions box along with a image of the world I got off google. Print both the front and back on photo paper, I prefer the satin paper...I dont like the glossy or matte look. Then you just line them up and spray glue (3M Super 77 is permanent and works great) them to thick cardstock. (this is a whole procedure itself....it took me alot of trial and error to get a good system going). As far as adding the silver, I lay down a piece of frisket and manually cut out the borders and lettering....then use silver spray paint. It takes a lot of patience and work, but IMO it looks better than the white. (On my vintage stuff, I skip this step) I then cut the borders with straight edge and razor and trim the corners. I use a corner rounder to get clean cuts on the corners...some people prefer scissors. Get a bubble and clean it up. Put the figure in it and then glue it with clear flexible craft glue. Simple as that...I guess. Im a bit of a perfectionist...I cant tell you how many times Ive reprinted out the same cards because I got a border crooked or something like that. Sucks because it costs a lot of money when I make mistakes, ink nor the paper is cheap! Anyway, good luck and have fun....I sure do! Btw, I still havent found a good way to put in a good, clean peg hanger hole in either the 25th cards or the vintage stuff. Until I can find a near OEM way, I wont do it. Ive been thinking about getting a tool like a dye or something made at a machine shop. Well see..... Last edited by Wyo; 12-26-2007 at 06:01 AM.. |

I started posting some of my custom replicas (I make the vintage styled blisters as well) here but it didn't seem that too many were interested. Oh well, I still have fun with it! Anyway, here's how I change colors using photoshop: Select the area you want to change using the Magic Wand Tool (you'll need to tweak the tolerance to suit your needs). The laso can also be used but I've never found the right touch ... Apply a 1 pixel feather (helps with the blending): Select --> Feather --> 1 pixel. Using the Hue/Saturation window, simply adjust as you deem appropriate: Image --> Adjustments --> Hue/Saturation. There are other options such as "replace color", "brightness/contrast", etc. that can give you some killer results, depending on how you use them. Pretty darn easy, huh? You can thank me later As for the punches, I bought a vintage styled punch that I use for my Star Wars and GI Joe customs. I find it makes the custom really pop when adding that little detail! |

Dude, how bout I thank you now! Thats awesome! I knew about those tools and Ive used them a bit but never to the extent that I could change the colors completely. I messed around with your suggestions a bit and it worked well!
You are going to save me A TON of work in the future! Ive been repainted the figures because Ive seen cards where the colors have been changed entirely in photoshop and it totally looks like it.....and I want to avoid that. Ill definteily experiment with your suggestions. Btw, post your work, Im interested! Gotta question, PM sent! Sam Last edited by Wyo; 12-28-2007 at 02:27 AM.. |

Glad I could help. Over the years other customizers have taught me tons of valuable, time-savings tips so I can certainly appreciate learning something that will save tons of time. The first time I made a Blue Snaggletooth cardback, it took me 50 hours! With the technique I listed above, I can do it in about 10 minutes and, frankly, the shading, etc. is 100% better.
PM'ed you back. |

I've been looking into doing some 25th style cardbacks. There is one good solution that would work, but its overly expensive. Its an ALPs MD5000 ribbon printer. They have the ability to print in silver foil.
I have an MD1000 I use for decals and other graphic printing. It can do silver metallic, but its nowhere near shiny enough to use for these cards. I MIGHT be able to use my MD1000 to print onto a metallic silver substrate. I'd need to lay down a layer of white and them print CMYK for the rest of the colors. The only problem I can think of is that my printers resolution may not be high enough to accurately replicate a card. -Gary |

Is that a 5 color printer?....does it print white or something? I thought of doing the same thing with silver photo paper. silver paper obviously didn't work because the color gets lost on the dark back ground. I kept thinking of ways that I put a layer or white similar to screen printing...but with an inkjet the paper is treated....I don't know about trying it with a laserjet. Ive havent been able to figure out how Hasbro does this 25th printing process....spray paint in the only thing that I can get close....and its still not as shiny the chrome. I dont think even with a coat of glossy clear....although its kinda close and displays well. Last edited by Wyo; 12-28-2007 at 11:31 PM.. |
