While I have a PoC "Wolf Hound" ready to be painted white (and turned into a proper "Snow Cat"), I needed a driver for it when it is done. I made a previous Frostbite (http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...frostbite.html) but once I was finished, I absolutely hated it. Hated it. So I found the Tri-Gate/SDS Frostbite head on here and had to get one for myself. The head sculpt really makes the figure. In going along with my "low-paint" trend of late, I opted to spend the money on an Arctic Hiss Driver on eBay and parted him out for Frostbite. As much as I disliked the RoC Frostbite as Frostbite, I actually ended up using the skirt piece on my final version. In the end, the only things painted on the body was the skirt, lower arms and lower legs so that their off-white matched the legs (well, the lower legs were blue/black, but the rest was an off-white-ish color). I redrew the Snow Cat logo in Illustrator and made a small patch for his arm that is more detailed than the original figure's patch. The collar is sculpted and the Destro holster was slightly modded to fit around it.
At long last, all 3 of my ARAH Arctic Joes together again: And part of my ever-growing, rag-tag Joe arctic team (minus PoC SnowJob, RoC Shipwreck and a half-dozen Arctic SEs of course). Last edited by Mandingo Rex; 09-14-2010 at 04:36 AM.. |

Thanks guys, for the feedback. He's one of my favorite customs now.
A few people have PMed me about how I made the collar. I simply used: Sculpey SuperFlex Bake & Bend Polymer Clay It's a Sculpey that stays flexible/rubbery when baked. It's fairly cheap, and really easy to use and easy to find in most craft stores. My pal GI Eddie pointed it out to me. It stays malleable until you bake it, but it ends up rubbery, just like webgear. The only real problem with the Sculpey Flex is that when you paint it, the paint doesn't seem to adhere 100%. For example, it stays just slightly tacky. Not anywhere near as bad as enamel paint on soft plastic, but if it touches something else that's painted, it tends to come off on it. It doesn't do that with other plastic though, so on my figure, it's not really a problem unless the beard sticks to the collar for an extended period of time. The good thing is—and the way to get around this problem altogether—if you get the multi-pack, you can blend the various basic colors together to get the appropriate color, so there's no need for painting for things like fur collars and hoods, etc. I am in the process of working with greenstuff for the first time and trying some things out, so I may swap out the collar for a new one down the road. It's completely removable, similar to the Snow Serpent collars, so there's no reason I can't update it if I feel the need to. Hope this helps. |

Love the pic of all three snow guys. He really looks different with that head sculpt and the taller body. Nice job.
