I'm sure there's a spot or two somewhere, where the paint might be a little lumpy/gritty. It's the nature of the material when painted, I can assure you. I can't find whatever you're seeing however, so please point it out. And the Hisstank name is Obi-Shinobi, btw. Jokabofe? Where?...
It's most apparent in this image. There's an all-over texturing that I'm not sure is dust or grittiness to the paint. But there's also a relatively large blemish that's definitely not dust on the right side of the chest (figure's right, viewer's left) just to the upper right of the ring. Looks like a glob of paint. The next most apparent area is the head, mostly just above the visor but a bit in the mouth region as well. Oh, one other small aesthetic opinion...the lacing in the back of the webgear is disturbingly corset-like. Reminds me of the 2007 con female troopers. I think functional snaps like used elsewhere in the webgear would be less corset-y. Last edited by shadowsun; 12-22-2008 at 07:32 PM.. |

Probably because in the case of those less adept customs, I can tell someone is new to the medium and people don't want to crush any nascent customizing egos.
With regards to Blasterman, that's obviously not the case and I'm sure he welcomes any constructive criticism so he knows what he can push further the next time. Being a professional artist, I know criticism is far more useful than a sea of "OMG AWESUM!!!" There's nothing there to point you in which direction to grow. If I was just trying to be a dick I would have told him that the custom was nice, but it'd be better if there was some sand and that would be the end of it. If you don't get that, you don't frequent the custom scene in places other than this forum. Once again, it's obviously well-crafted but I stand by my criticisms. The choice of materials and aesthetic is preference. |

Yeah...
What you're seeing on the body and gear is the texture of the material for the most part, with a little bit of dust thrown in for good measure. The blemish you're seeing is actually a small spot of glue that I simply didn't catch. These things happen sometimes - oh well, it really doesn't take away from the overall fig imo, and evidently many others. The head/face is showing some dust bits, but other than that it's fine. I apologize for not taking my photos in a sealed, environmentally controlled room. Thanks for your eagle eyes though. Quote:

Hey Obi,
I am a professional artist (graphic designer) as well. I also have done some customs and even one similar to this one (check the sig). But I find Shadowsun's criticisms to be in vain really. Complaining about Snake Eyes being too black visually is just absurd. Also the canvas totally fits the real world feel you were able to bring to the figure. I tend to think that criticism was more just to stand alone against a sea of wellwishers. I think you did an amazing job and all this nitpicking is bound to happen when you hit something out of the park like this.

The back "lacing" on the web gear is also on the 12" version, and it's also used on real-world gear. Anything else? And my other criticism: I do have to say I’m a little disappointed you didn’t get out your micro / nano engineering kit and make a working compass, and a working watch (that of course would need to keep perfect time) for the other wrist. But otherwise you did an ok job - it's not too bad... (in case no one got it I'm being a sarcastic smart ass above, and I'm just kidding!!! - This is truly one of the best customs I have even seen, and the best Snake eyes I have ever seen - I would so buy one of these and pay good money for it! ) |

I would push a little a little handicapped kid out of the way to get to one of those if it was hanging on a peg in a toy isle. It looks that awesome.

First you make a paratrooper withOUT a working altimeter, and now the "compass" doesn't even point true North?
Man, I thought you were progressing, but it's clear to me you're just not serious about your hobby or life in general. I hope you at least put a working satellite phone in one of those pouches. And would it kill you to make a smg with a fully functional bolt and receiver mechanism, bullet-filled magazines, and a removable barrel? And give him a steel sword, for God's sake! Real mute ninja spec ops soldiers can't chop a damn thing with a styrene blade. Tomorrow's Festivus and I'm really disappointed in you, young man. With that said, everybody's entitled to their opinion fellas, and sometimes the constructive criticism is the most helpful, even though it might sting a bit. |
