According to IMDB, the MASS Device 5-part mini-series was first broadcast in September of 1983. If I wasn't hooked on GIJOE before then, I sure was after watching it! I quickly realized the MASS Device was not going to be made into a toy by Hasbro so I decided I needed to make one (and eventually a 2nd) myself.
Recipe: a couple of cardboard boxes I had laying around. a 2-liter bottle with the label removed extra posterboard pieces 3 Testors paint jars (emptied and cleaned out) chunks of red crayon (for the red crystals element) water with blue food coloring (for the "heavy water" element) finely ground yellow crayon (for the meteorite particles element) lots of scotch tape permanent markers The Cobra MASS Device was first built. Then the Joe one was added soon after. I found the Polaroid pics of these a few days ago and was jumping up and down like I was 12 years old again (I was 12 in 1983). I have plans on making new ones like these (regardless of the Hasbro 25th Anniversary version) because I want them in better scale and proper colors. This time I think I'll use foam core and spray paint for the main parts and then add other details. I'm not out to make a perfect toy, just something fun to display and play with.

I wish I had pictures of all my dioramas from my childhood. At the height of my dio building days I had a sewer playset for my turtles that was almost six feet long made of wood and cardboard.

Cool man! I had the same Star Wars pillow cases and bed sheets too! Good times! How I miss them.

I love this! I know I created dios of some sort, but I can't remember for the life of me as I sit here and type. It'll probably hit me as I'm trying to sleep... ;)

OMG that's so AWESOME!!!!!! Wish I had pics of my early childhood attempts.
My brother and I built up an entire GI Joe city out of cardboard when we were kids. It took up almost half of our garage. In that entire city, there was only one bathroom and we use to make the Joes stand in line for it. Not sure why we did that... Perhaps it struck us as odd that the Terror Drome and the GI Joe bases never had a toilet...
