Hey guys maybe you can help me,
I know there are a ton of places for us to buy figures both brick and mortar and online and E-bay. But it seems to me there is one niche that no one has fully explored and that is the Customizing community. Do you guys think that the community is big enough to support its own online store? What I mean is this would be a store that would solely be geared towards all things we need for Custom Figures, basic loose parts, heads, bodies etc, casting resins and mold makers, sculpting tools and clays, paints, brushes, etc. Probably would sell custom packs to make specific figures etc, as well as extra weapons and decals. This would be all in one place at one store. So you wouldn't have to run all over town trying to pieces all your needs together. I'm thinking about starting a store like this online. Do you think there is a big enough of a demand to support it or would I just be wasting my time? I'd highly appreciate your input. Sincerely, Zartanman

As long as you have multiple product lines it could work. I don't know how many individuals there are to support it though. Although there are some excellent custom makers, I don't know if there is enough to support such a store. You would have to create a name for yourself within their community to really get it cracking.

I'm not sure there would be enough support for it to be worth your while. Since many of us customizers are networked together either through the "Parts Needed" thread here or via other sites (or through personal contact), it seems that finding a necessary part isn't all that hard. Also, if certain parts are needed, there are a couple of etailers such as Joeparts that we can get them from. While it might be convenient for some to have a one stop shopping area, I know I wouldn't look forward to paying "inflated" prices for individual bits when I can usually trade 1 for 1. I'm not saying you intend to gouge anyone, but if you're going to make a profit, you are going to have to up the price. It would just be natural that sought after parts, or those from "rare" figures would end up priced accordingly.

Thanks for the input guys. Yeah Pyro, I would do my best to keep the profits to a minimum while still trying to make a living. Not sure yet but I am seriously considering trying the idea.

I had a thought similar cross my mind. Hasbro online selling exclusive custom kits. Blank white, black, blue or tan bodies based off of Snake-Eyes/Stalker, Duke/Flint, Cobra Soldier, Firefly/BH, etc. Or a leg kit, torso kit, arms kit. Completely geared towards the custom builder/collector to have a blank canvas.

the problem you'd run into is you'd have to have a product better than each of the existing specialty dealers already out there. Head casts better than Alyosha or Tri-Gate creations, custom weapons better than Marauder, Vintage parts and accessories better than Joe Armoury or Joe Parts, having enough of everything in stock to fill the needs of a growing community, and as noted above, somehow providing the parts in a more convenient way than all the party to party swaps that are a big part of the community.
I think it would take a ton of research, as well as a ton of effort to get your name out and establish the necessary cred to draw people in. You have to start somewhere, so I'd never tell someone not to try, but I'd always recommend a thorough understanding of the competition. The one-stop shop is something not overly available right now, but as a customer, I'd rather get the best quality of each item from 5 different sources, than to get lesser options all at once from the same source. I'm not judging what your product would be like, obviously, but just saying that to work, you'd have a pretty high bar already set for yourself. |

Yeah, my idea centered more around blank figures than customs. I still dig all out sources for the really custom parts, but blank bodies from Hasbro that match existing pieces we use and back to accessory packs and the such would be awesome. Or one simple kit with 4 complete bodies and a few weapons and you imagination. More like Stikfas.
