Okay...this is out of the norm...but when I seen this Star Wars vehicle...at first I seen a Hurricane in the mix...but then I decided to go with a Python Pattern.

I cut the missile tabs off an old rattler shell...and with the aid of green stuff putty applied the tabs to the undercarriage cage....to put some added arsenal to it:

I also removed the droid...and added a gun (I believe of some chap mei origin) in its place...it rotates above the inner wing placement and works well. I haven't made a pilot yet...but plan on that. I have an extra 25th AVAC that may fill the job...but time will tell. As always....critiques and comments welcome.

Wow, that is amazing!!!
How do you do the Python pattern? Do you paint with a basic coat of black, and then spray that purplish color on through a net? It's razor sharp. Did you airbrush with Testor's? |

As for the pattern...it is produced with "Sweater Dryer Bags". You can purchase them at most department stores in the housewares department. Basically...they are nylon mesh bags that you throw in the dryer. For those of you with kids...ask your wife's about them....usually they are used for little kid socks so they don't get lost in the wash or dryer. They are relatively cheap...under 5 bucks...and as stated a bag. I just cut the seams so that you have a larger piece of mesh to work with...and you get a fair amount of use out of one bag. As for the paint...it is regular spray paint. Not an airbrush. You paint your base coat color...in this case: maroon. After it dries...put the mesh on...and use black spray paint for the pattern. Look at the pics and picture a piece of mesh....if you spray over it...you basically spray the octagon shapes which you see in black. When that dries...I reapply the mesh and do the silver striping pattern. It takes some practice till you feel comfortable with it...but luckily that is why God invented cheap Corps vehicles to practice on. lol

I really love that vehicle. awesome paint job.
the only thing keeping me from buying one is the window. It looks too much like star wars. that is not a dis on your custom only a cry for some sort of answer out of the customizing community as to an idea for a solution. |

Trust me...the level of frustration one can achieve in mastering this...I REACHED!! One night...I started on a project at 10 p.m. , my wife left for work for 3'rd shift....what seemed like a couple hours of trial and error for me....yeah, it was longer than that. My wife came home after 7 a.m. the next morning and I will still there at it...fighting to master it. <--- Absolutely True Story I gave up a couple times....had to stew for a bit...and then came back to it, till I got it. The sweater dryer bags are the trick...they are the perfect size mesh pattern for the job. When you put the pattern on...just try to get it as snug to the surface as possible before painting....and then lift it off while still wet (when done spraying...remove the pattern). For those impossible to reach areas...what I have found works...is to move back farther with the spray paint from the area you are painting....basically...let gravity pull the paint into the areas, the pattern will stop it from masking totally out. What I do often when checking to see how a new color scheme will work...will also work great for practicing. Cardboard. Slap the pattern on cardboard pieces and paint away. After time the mesh will get stiff from the paint that dried on it....all I do is grab the mesh and rub it together between both hands....it takes the stiffness out and allows you to keep using it. Don't give up buddy....trust me...if I can do it...you can too. And once you get the knack of it...you are gonna be happy you took the time to learn it. I'll help you in anyway I can friend in your quest to conquer this obstacle!
