Was browsing through YoJoe.com when I was reminded of the the 2004 Valor vs. Venom Shipwreck figure (a.k.a. Shipwreck v8):
I never really paid much attention to the post-ARAH, pre-25th Anniversary figures (the so-called "Generation 2" figures), but I've always thought that this version of the character looked pretty good, and was much more functional than the classic "crackerjack" design (which is still my favourite look for the character, goofiness aside). Anyway, going through my drawer of G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra figures, I saw that I pretty much had everything I needed to make a half-decent approximation of the 2004 figure without having to break out the tools or the paintbrushes: Parts list:
I thought PoC Clutch (excuse me, Double Clutch) was a better choice for Shipwreck myself with the black beard and all—which is how Shipwreck's hair is usually coloured in the cartoons and the comics—but since the VvV Shipwreck had brown hair, I went for the Bench-Press head (also, the Bench-Press head is the exact size for the boonie hat). I considered using the BBTS-exclusive Mercer's hands to accurately reflect the cut-off gloves of the original, but the plastic used for the BBTS figures feels a little bit softer to me than that used for regular Joes, and I didn't want to risk tearing or deforming the pegs. One of those cheap Chap Mei patrol boats that litter Toys 'ᴙ' Us could probably stand-in for the Piranha Attack Boat the original figure came with, now that I think about it, but I'm not big on 1:18 vehicles. It's an idea, anyway, for those of you who might want to go whole hog with a similar custom figure of your own. Aside: Now that there's some temporal distance from the relative disappointment of the film and I've relegated all the spring-loaded crap to the Ziploc Bag of Useless Accessories, I'm beginning to develop belated appreciation for the RoC figures: the females are fairly well-sculpted (although it's hard to appreciate the sculpts underneath the mediocre paint-jobs) and have surprisingly good articulation (especially Scarlett v11), the bulk of the weapons are decent despite being occasionally out-of-scale, and the male Joe figures, if nothing else, make for interesting kitbash fodder (some figures, like Breaker v4 and Snake-Eyes v43, I find, have some of the best overall articulation in the pre-PoC/30th Anniversary modern era). |

You have a good eye there. Nice find and good idea for a custom.
Too bad I already used my extra Bench Press head on my 25th Breaker though. By the way do you think that the gloved hands used on figures like Resolute Duke or ROC Sgt. Thunderblast (Thunder) would look more like the ARAH version of this Shipwreck instead of the Para-Viper ones?

Glad I could give you a starting point for your own kitbash. It's kind of easy to overlook the RoC figures for fodder because they're associated with a lot of negativity (the bulky spring-loaded weapons, the mediocre movie, some questionable costume design choices, etc.) but get past all those issues and you'll find that a lot of the figures are actually fairly decent out-of-the-box (or off-the-card, as it were).

By the way do you think that the gloved Airborne hands would look more like the ARAH version of this Shipwreck instead of the Para-Viper ones? Bench Press' head seems to be a popular choice for replacing the 25th Anniversary Breaker's factory mug. Good call on Airborne's hands. Had forgotten that the figure came with cut-off gloves. Maybe I can track down a loose 25th Airborne at some point. Thanks. |

Never cared for that Shipwreck, but these parts look awesome together. I can't resist non painting part swaps like this. May have to buy the donor parts after all.

Cool figure.
Never been a fan of SW as a SEAL :(, but I love simple, GOOD looking kit bashes like this. I COMPLETELY agree on the use of the BP head in place of the Clutch one. Plus I think the Clutch head is just a "little" smaller in size than the BP one. Nice work.
