I use mostly Games Workshop paints, with some Vallejo Model Air and P3 paints (they're by Privateer Press). They're all acrylic paints for models.
The gun is GW black with Charadon Granite casing, given a Badab Black wash, with a couple of details in boltgun metal. GW Foundation Paints (muted tones with high pigment content so they're very opaque) and their washes are really, really useful for customs because they let you put on a base coat and shade it very quickly and easily. I gave him a coat of gloss varnish followed by matt varnish. I think some traces of gloss are what makes his face a bit shiny. For this figure I didn't try sanding down the joints to prevent paint rub, so he's pretty much one-pose. I've now got a Dremel so I'm hoping to do that to any future customs. Oddly enough one of those is Helix, although her glocks are mostly boltgun metal with sexy ivory-coloured grips. |

The chest symbol was done by applying a decal from an aircraft kit (in this case a 1/48 F-22 Raptor) which was of a shield with a symbol on it and a motto underneath. I then painted out the interior detail, leaving a shield shape and the scroll banner. The details and lettering were painted in using a picture of a Fort Benning logo as reference, although my version is very simplified. Since the non-film Duke went to Fort Benning according to his character bio, I thought he'd be likely to have a t-shirt with that logo on it.
The lettering reads 'Follow Me' which is the Fort Benning motto according to a net search. Tip for lettering - start with the middle letter and work outwards, so you're less likely to go off the edge. Last edited by republicofben; 01-19-2012 at 08:08 PM.. |

You can sand down points of contact by hand with a sheet of super-fine grit paper- or a sponge- or you can use those super-fine grit-tool heads they use for cleaning old coins if you want to go the Dremel route. And/or a layer of Krylon Acrylic Crystal Clear Flat will deter paint rub at points of contact. If your paint layers are thin enough then some people spread a final layer of superglue to prevent paint rub at the joints. Can't wait to see your Helix custom... |

At first glance I thought you were doing a roc version of a robocop update, part man part robot suit!
