Part 129: In the Garden with Iron Beasts
In a very short time, the refinery city of Prometheus had been turned into a fortress. The arrival of the Royal Crimson Guard Dragoons commanded by the legendary Field Marshall Collin O’Hara, codename, the Matador, along with mechanized armored division called Walking Hell, the defenses around Prometheus appeared to be impenetrable. Walking Hell was led by Major Helena Briggs, codename 101 Street Gang, and her war walker A.S.P. (Assault System Platform) which she named Dust. With Walking Hell preparing to defend Prometheus from the self-proclaimed Rebel Angels, the city resembled a garden full of iron beasts. Major Briggs made a name for herself several years ago. It was during a conflict now referred to as the Eastern Rebellion where forces of Cobra battled those of Mighty Destro and the Iron Grenadiers. Although Cobra’s forces defeated the Iron Grenadiers during that conflict, the hostilities between Mighty Destro and all of Cobra are far from over. Even now, as Walking Hell and the Royal Crimson Guard Dragoons prepare to defend Prometheus from the Rebel Angels, all thoughts are that of the coming of the Iron Grenadiers. As they live and breathe, Mighty Destro himself is aboard the I.G.S. (Iron Grenadiers Ship) Bahamut in route to lead an invasion force for all of Sector 858A. The Rebel Angels were merely a thorn in their side. Be that as it may, their preparations were no less rigorous for the rebels. After all, these were no mere peasants with pitch forks. They were once a unit of Cobra’s elite fighting force, the 13th Vipers Foreign Legion. It had been raining all morning. Major Briggs was inside her war walker, Dust. The Rebel Angels were reportedly just outside the city. Her orders were to sit, and wait. To her, the waiting was the worst part of war. There was nothing to do to fight off boredom. She listened to the radio chatter mixed with the sound of the rain drops pinging on the hull of her war walker. She could tell that her troops’ morale was at breaking point. It has been nearly 2 weeks since their arrival. They haven’t seen any action. Despite the boredom, she was glad to have been there. She was glad to have seen her old friend, Field Marshall O’Hara. They had been friends since childhood. They met at Cobra Youth Camp. She day dreamed about their moments together. She remembered how he always stood up for her when the other children ridiculed her for having one blind eye. Her moment of reminiscing was suddenly interrupted by her Sgt.’s voice over the radio. “Major, it’s me. Requesting permission to broadcast a song to our troops. Just a nice way to say good morning and boost their spirits, what do you say Major? It’s a great song from the 20th century. I traded some of our supplies for a file full of music from one of the street rats here. I think you’ll like it.” Knowing that Field Marshall O’Hara could be listening, Major Briggs replied “Sgt., you know music from that era is considered contraband. I could have you hanged for this.” Confused, the Sgt. chuckled and asked “are you kidding?” Suddenly a man’s unmistakable voice interrupted them over the radio “Sgt,, do you know who this is?” The Sgt. replied, “YES MINE FIELD MARSHALL!” Field Marshall O’Hara – “Did you hear your Major? Is there some misunderstanding?” The Sgt. replied again, but this time in a shaky voice – “No, no Sir, there is no misunderstanding.” Field Marshall O’Hara – “So you understand you can be hanged for this. Well Sgt., what are you waiting for? Play the song.” Within the privacy of her war walker, Major Briggs managed a quiet smile. She remembered how Collin O’Hara enjoyed teasing his men and scaring the hell out of them. The Sgt. replied again, but this time more confidently after realizing the good Field Marshall was only joking, “Yes Sir, broadcasting now! To all Cobra forces, GOOOOOOOOOD MORNING PROMETHEUS!!!!!!!” Play this song now: Suddenly, Major Briggs noticed how the pinging off her war walker had stopped. The rain stopped. She knew what this meant. Everything in her body told her that this break in the weather meant the rebels would attack soon. But for now, she decided to open the hatch and get some fresh air. The air in Prometheus was nice and crisp after the rain. It seemed to wash away all the pollution from the sky. As the hatch opened, her eyes squinted as the sunlight finally pierced through the clouds and showered them in golden rays of light. She watched as the troops around her began to nod their heads to this song. She watched as VTOL transports brought in last minute supplies and as her men unloaded them. As they approached from above, the transports blew a whirl of dust, debris, mud and water vapor all over the Crimson Guard Dragoons and all over what is normally their neatly kept uniforms. The song seems to be working. The troops’ spirit seemed to be lifting. But all of a sudden, the moment was ruined by the sound of an explosion in the distance. Major Briggs looked toward the sound. It was coming from a section where der Schrott Eisen had predicted the rebels would be attacking from. The first sound was followed by another explosion. Then all hell broke loose. She heard the unmistakable sound of heavy machine gun fire. The rapid popping echoed throughout the city. The song on her radio suddenly turned off (TURN OFF THE MUSIC). The song was replaced by a Tele-Viper’s voice urgently requesting a fire mission. “101 Street Gang, this is Fire Control, request fire mission: coordinates 1 1 0 – 5 8, over” She quickly climbed back into Dust and replied – “101 Street Gang, confirmed, H. E. rounds, creeping barrage, coordinates 1 1 0 – 5 8.” Fire Control replied “Confirmed, clear to fire.” With that, Major Briggs fired up Dust, the dash lights came on, the engine whirled, and the iron beast came alive. Its massive electromagnetic rail guns cranked upward with a creaking sound and unleashed thunder. She hurled several high explosive rounds across the sky. All of Walking Hell did the same. She was convinced that the small band of Rebels were just handed a deathblow. But she was shocked when she heard cries for close infantry support. The radio crackled with “The 13th are charging the field . .. . they’re charging the field. . . . we are overrun, repeat, we are overrun . . .” She immediately commanded Walking Hell to re-arm and deploy for close infantry support. The iron beasts marched to the front lines. When she arrived to the front lines, she was shocked. The Rebels had charged the field on foot and completely overran the Crimson Guards’ defensive lines. She was told that the Rebels were once the 13th Vipers Foreign Legion. What she didn’t know, was that these men were the 176th Light Brigade of the 13th Vipers Foreign Legion. The Light Brigade was known for its ability to move fast, hit hard, and hit often. Even more shocking was, they had heavy weapons. She spotted Rebels approaching. She opened up on them with her twin guns rapidly firing anti-personnel cluster bombs. The shells exploded blanketing the entire area. Those troops were incinerated. But another group of Rebels appeared on her left flank. She fired again and again. With each volley of fire, she marked the fields with death, but they kept coming. Her radio crackled with other war walker pilots voices screaming, “Taking fire!” It was the Sgt. who played the song that morning. She saw his war walker, it was crippled. He was trying to make his way back towards safety. And suddenly, she saw the hull of his war walker erupt in flames from within. And they appeared again. This time, they appeared on her right flank. Before she could react, her war walker was rocked. Her body was slammed to her left. The shot did not come from the troopers on her right flank. This could only mean one thing; she realized right away that she was surrounded. The damage read-out indicated that the left leg was not responding. She could only limp back towards friendly forces. But it happened again. This time, a Rebel trooper on her right flank scored a direct hit. The Dust collapsed completely. Her body was slammed against the inside wall. The interior lights went out. She was in complete darkness. Smoke was filling the cockpit. She couldn’t move her left arm, She knew it must’ve been broken. She had to muster all her strength just to pull the emergency release. The hatch popped open and she managed to crawl out. The sun blinded her. She could barely see. She was covered in soot from the black smoke now billowing out of the hatch. She crawled out into the mud. The Rebel troopers approached her firing their assault rifles the entire time. She fired her pistol in their direction as she crawled through the mud as best she could with one broken arm. She looked up towards the direction she was crawling. And that’s when she saw it. A Rebel Trooper suddenly appeared in front of her. She was staring straight down the trooper’s assault rifle. Her mind suddenly drifted away. PLAY THIS SONG WHILE READING THE REST OF THE STORY She began day dreaming again about her days in Cobra Youth Camp. She remembered her time again with the young Collin O’Hara. How they snuck out together after curfew. How they shared their first kiss. And later, how they fought together during the Eastern Rebellion. It was during that conflict that Major Briggs really made a name for herself. She fought valiantly. During that conflict, her actions delayed Destro’s entire 6th Armor Division from encircling all of Cobra’s forces. Though Collin O’Hara once jokingly said that she fought so valiantly, not to serve Cobra, but to save her own neck considering she was alone and completely cut off from support, the truth was more complicated than that. She didn’t fight to save her own neck. She fought to save his. And she was glad to have seen him again here in Prometheus. The two old friends shared precious time together again. She was determined to tell him of her feelings for him. But as brave as a warrior as she was, she just couldn’t bring herself to do it. He was after all, now a Field Marshall and a legend in his own way. And despite her battle hardened upbringing, she feared he will always see her as the frightened one-eyed girl from Cobra Youth Camp. Her mind suddenly drifted back to reality. She was still looking straight into the Rebel trooper’s assault rifle. Not a moment had passed in reality. She noticed this trooper had a red pony tail. And the last thing she saw, was a muzzle flash. She died happy knowing that the last person she thought of in life was Collin O’Hara. She often asked herself in her private moments, “Who will you think of, when your life flashes before your eyes?” .
