Ten years. Three continents. Thousands of photos. Half-assed head swaps! Welcome to HISS Tank's most self-indulgent thread, filled to bursting with lazy-bastard customs, toy photography and inane commentary! Should you understandably wish to avoid the tiresome trudge through all fifty-some or—depending on your settings—all hundred-some pages of this thread, here are sneak peeks of some of the more recent kitbashes and portraits: Thank You: 1FormidableJoe, 666Werecat, Agent11b, Air-tight, AMF, ash50187, Atomic Platypus, Attila, azoric, Balaclava, Beckley, BigErn, blackbarn, BlackThorne, BlazerZR5, boothj, Bravo Sierra, ceraurus, CG23, ChevyMel, Cobra-La, cobracobra, Cobraoner, code_red_shockwave, Contraband, Conway, Crimson Gord, Cuda, DarkHorse, DARKWIND, darth viper, dmizrock, docdrako, Dod Ear, Dragasses, Dragongravy, Dr. Vile, driftwood, dsrader, Dunedain, elmobfaelnar15, england joe, EvilMonkeyPrime, fireflyguy, flash70, Flint-wo2, Flint071, fogger1138, GAAWAY, GIJOEY, GI Flow, GigaMach, GILTYONE, goosetuber, Griff, Ground Pounder, hahoo3, haradrel, hardcorps, hemblecreations, heymilt, hotmitts, iDzBowl, Indiana Joe, Inggasson, instinct2784, Jay West, jiffy18, jmg4321, joecrazybill, joenavy69, joesilver, joewolfsoul, Kevin, kevuno, KINGOFNOD5, kingpropes, KINKO, Kitchen Viper, Konigstiger, Kujo, lance858a, lips, lowlight27, Lt. I'm a fan of the classic jungle safari hero archetype, and so I bought a Defense of Cobra Island 7-pack just for Mindbender's head, so's I could put together this guy:
I call him William Winchester. Battle Cat is his mysterious friend; Winchester calls him Babel. Babel by Geek Creek, on Flickr Symmetry by Geek Creek, on Flickr William Winchester by Geek Creek, on Flickr King Solomon's Mines by Geek Creek, on Flickr I took this one during a field trip to an extinct volcano during my final weeks in Africa: EDIT: Found this one a couple days later: The premise: Winchester and Recondo are deep in a jungle on a missionary quest or after some diamonds or whatever (they're from the 1890s), when suddenly all this ancient machinery erupts from the earth all around them and completely envelops them. I never explored the story further, but if I ever get started on my dio series, I'm sure this tale will take place in it somewhere. EDITED TO ADD RECIPE: Body: Rise of Cobra Wal-Mart-exclusive two-pack Gung Ho Head: Defense of Cobra Island Dr. Mindbender Vest: Attack On Cobra Island Outback Belt: City Strike Snake Eyes Neck Cloth: Extreme Conditions Major Bludd (I think) Hands: I don't recall, but the black pieces are from two Attack On Cobra Island Chuckles figures Accessories: Hat from Pursuit of Cobra Recondo; cross from some Indiana Jones figure or another Backpack: 25th Anniversary Airborne (I think) Coming soon, courtesy of Django, a steampunk-style backpack for Mr. Winchester: I'm thinking I'll tie it into the "Industrial Revolution" story. Here's Souvenir:
His original name was Veneer. But he likes to hoard keepsakes from his victims, and when a passing Dreadnok called out to him, "Oy, is you Veneer?" it sounded as if he'd said, "Oy, a souvenir?" Veneer decided that "Souvenir" was a more fitting name. His appearance itself is a keepsake; he burned a Joe alive, and now he wears his suit to mock the other Joes. Here's that victim, in happier times: Cobra dudes don't particularly enjoy working with Souvenir, 'cause when things get slow he's liable to go freelance with no warning: Here are some more portraits of Souvenir: All My Toys are Broken by Geek Creek, on Flickr Fire Walk With Me by Geek Creek, on Flickr Anthropology by Geek Creek, on Flickr There Is No God And We Are His Prophets by Geek Creek, on Flickr Last edited by Monte Williams; 01-17-2014 at 12:50 AM.. |

I need to find a way to get some backdrops here in Lahore for indoor photos. This guy would look much better complimented by a Django-style diorama and some Django-style lighting, but outdoor photos are all I know.
I call him Red Queen. I haven't fleshed out his background yet. EDITED TO ADD RECIPE: Body: Resolute 5-Pack Cobra Trooper Head: Pursuit of Cobra Alley Viper Helmet: Pursuit of Cobra Alley Viper Belt Thing: Pursuit of Cobra Storm Shadow Cape: Resolute 5-Pack Cobra Commander Accessories: Light Saber from some Star Wars figure or another; shield from PoC Alley Viper Backpack and swords: Pursuit of Cobra Storm Shadow Last edited by Monte Williams; 01-17-2014 at 12:52 AM.. Here's a Joe mountain climber I've yet to name:
Like I said at JoeDios, I like that he looks like a total jerk even though he's ostensibly a good guy; I know the head is from a Cobra, but on this body he somehow looks like an obnoxious extreme sports frat boy you'd just like to punch in the nose. I figure not all the good guys can be great guys. EDITED TO ADD RECIPE: Body: Rise of Cobra Wal-Mart-Exclusive Two-Pack Gung Ho Head: Pursuit of Cobra Dreadnok Storm Rider Webgear: Attack on the Pit Neo Viper (I think) Backpack: PoC Alley Viper Last edited by Monte Williams; 01-17-2014 at 01:02 AM.. The name Amber Dextrous is taken from my novel, which I've abandoned. The hair is a "Doctor" Rex Lewis wig; I have five or six Doctor figures, so it wasn't much of a sacrifice. A rarity in my collection: a custom of an actual G.I. Joe character.
This is also rare because it is literally the only custom in my collection for which I dared to use paint; I'm something of a coward in that regard, and I am absolutely humbled by some of the things the rest of you bastards are able to do with paint. Many of my customs are nothing but head-swaps; I nearly jokingly claimed that the Battle Cat in my William Winchester photos is a custom, because hey, I took off his helmet.
Point being, I find that sometimes, a head-swap is all one needs. I like to think that this guy is an example. I call him Motorhead. I intend to someday put together an epic dio series spanning several "seasons" of ten episodes each. I plan to call it Damage, Incorporated, after the Metallica song.
If I ever settle down in the States again and find a way to create the custom backdrop(s) I envision for the series and find the time to write and photograph the whole works, its tales will span several decades. One of the heroes it'll highlight from the late '30s and early '40s is Gray Ghost (name blatantly stolen from Batman the Animated Series), and his sidekick, Spooky: EDITED TO ADD RECIPES: Gray Ghost: Body: Rise of Cobra Destro Head: Attack On Cobra Island Zap Gun: 25th Anniversary Cobra Commander (it looks like a pulp hero's gun) Spooky: Body: City Strike Snake Eyes Head: Marvel Universe Bucky Upper Legs: Rise of Cobra Doctor Lower Legs: PoC Alley Viper Belt: I don't remember, sorry Spear Thing: Lade Jaye (I Think) Last edited by Monte Williams; 01-17-2014 at 12:59 AM..
