First off: My pictures suck, so sorry about that. Still, I think you guys will be able to get a pretty good idea of what I've got here.
The bottom and back are just foam core, painted with spray paint. Light blue on the back one and textured outdoor paint on the bottom panel (to look like sand, in this case). The set piece is a Tech Deck (the little mini skateboard things) skate park set that I got at Target last week for $5 on clearance. Originally $20 or so, now that I know how great it is I might buy more at full price when I see them. This set is some corner in California, there's another one (that I don't have) that's a fountain and some others that are stairs on a brick wall and other things. They seem to be pretty darn close to scale with Joes (or close enough that it doesn't really matter). My initial plan for this dio was to build something out of foam core, and have it be pretty much permanent. Once I found the tech deck thing and worked out my plan for this one, I decided to track down some other playsets from this line and do 4 shelves in my cabinet like this, basically because all the parts are interchangeable. I'm going to find some other textured paints for other surfaces (asphalt, or if I can find a green one grass/jungle) and it should be super-easy to change things up every month or two. Add in my PTE tower and some corps stuff, and I've actually got some displays that the girlfriend is impressed with (instead of just teasing me for having toys everywhere!) The killer is having one big heavy piece of plastic in there holds the back up, though I suppose you could double-sided tape the back up too. I plan on using the super-nice printer at work to get some better backdrops down the road too, but I was just so stoked with how this first step turned out I figured I'd go ahead and post it. Anywho, hopefully I've opened some more ideas for you guys. As I do more shelves I'll add 'em or post another thread for each. I can totally see this getting really fun as I expand my dio set pieces and start building some stuff. ** Edit: Since I know someone will ask, the bricks are from a cheesy (and literally) "brick and mortar" playset I picked up at a bargain store for cheap a while back. The bricks were super-glued together, then I broke it (accidentally) but the pattern still shows through, so it ended up kinda neat. Here's a link to some of the sets: http://www.google.com/search?q=intel...w=1280&bih=646 Also there's an easy head-swap custom in there, I took HoH Flint's head and webgear and stuck it on the not-beachhead figure from the PoC Awe Striker to make a "desert Flint." Obviously there's two of Dusty in there too. Last edited by BenjaminXavier; 08-07-2011 at 07:10 AM.. Reason: edit: more info |

Now you need a couple of very 80ish skate boarding joes to rock out on some ramps. That'd be cool.
These are fairly neat road pieces. Cool. |
