I got the okay from Sergeant Major to post this this morning:
My friend Bill released his first GI Joe novel through Kindle Worlds earlier this month. If you're a fan of the Joes from the 80s, you'll love the book(I finished it the other day), even if you didn't grow up with the 80s Joes, you'll still fall in love with the characters and experience the start of Cobra and the GI Joe team. You can find the book here: G.I. JOE: G.I. Joe: First Salvo (Kindle Worlds) - Kindle edition by Bill Nedrow. Literature & Fiction Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com. You can download it and read it on a Kindle, but you don't need one, you can also download an app for your smartphone or a reader for your PC: Amazon.com: Free Kindle Reading Apps With that said, he started a custom contest for the book on his Facebook page(you don't have to be a FB member to enter): https://www.facebook.com/BillNedrowsGIJoeNovel Quote:
Rules:
1) Must be a new custom, made just for this contest. 2) Must depict a character as described in the novel G.I. Joe: First Salvo. 3) You must submit up to five pictures of the custom. One can be a diorama shot, but only the figure will be judged. Figures can be posted here or emailed to [email protected]. All emailed entries will be posted here. 4) All entries must be received by midnight (central time) of September 30th. 5) The winner will either be selected by a fan poll or judged by me. 6) The prize will be a blank body figure from Boss Fight. Because Boss Fight will not be shipping their product until February, the winner will not have the prize mailed until after that time. If there are any questions, feel free to post them to this page or contact me at [email protected]. FIRST UPDATE: Quote:
I am pleased to share a lot of exciting news regarding this contest. First of all, a number of new prizes have been made available. Robert Atkins, the talented and brilliant G.I. Joe artist, has agreed to donate art and signed prints as prizes. I'd like to send a very special thanks to Mr. Atkins for his generous support. Next, Big Bad Toy Store has agreed to donate a $40 gift certificate to add to the prizes as well. This may go to the winner or get split up among winners. I will post details about how all of the prizes get distributed after another bit of news is made official next week.
Another donor has agreed to donate a Logan "Command Ops" figure from Marauder Task Force Gaming. Like the Boss Fight figure, this will not be sent out until Marauder mails their product out to the people who supported their Kickstarter campaign. The fourth bit of news must remain somewhat obscure as of this posting, but I can say that another group has agreed not only to donate yet another prize but also to send out incentives for people who have made a commitment to participating in the contest. I can't say more until I have the items in hand, but these will appeal to customizers a great deal. These incentives will be limited in number and will only be made available to people who demonstrate a commitment to the custom contest (those seeking the incentive will be asked a question from the book to demonstrate that they have purchased it). All told, we now have a Boss Fight blank body, Robert Atkins art, a Big Bad Toy Store gift certificate, a Marauder Logan "Command Ops" figure, and a mystery prize to be announced in the future (probably next week) as prizes for this contest, as well as incentives to mail out for people who are committed to entering the contest. I'd like to once again thank all of the people and companies who have agreed to support this project and those people who have worked behind the scenes to make this all possible. The new incentive for the G.I. Joe: First Salvo custom contest can now be announced. Thanks to The AngelForge, we now have 15 sets of custom grab bag parts to distribute to people who are committed to entering the contest. Each grab bag includes 5 heads. One grab bag each will be given to the first 15 people who contact me and indicate that they are entering the contest. Participants will be asked a question about the novel to verify that the book has been purchased. Grab bags will be chosen at random and mailed to the participants. AngelForge has also added a prize pack to the prize pool (which also includes Robert Atkins artwork, a BBTS gift certificate, a Boss Fight blank body, and a Marauder action figure).
Pictures and further details can be found at the Facebook page. |

With the arrival of Robert Atkins's art (again, a big thanks to Mr. Atkins for his generous contributions), we are now ready to announce the prize structure for the G.I. Joe: First Salvo custom contest.
First Prize: Winner's choice of one of the two original Atkins sketches (Duke or Viper), winner's choice of one of the three autographed books (Robert Atkins Declassified, Atkins: The Art of Declassified, or Snake-Eyes: Cobra Civil War), a Boss Fight blank body, and an AngelForge custom parts package. Second Prize: A Robert Atkins original sketch, choice of one of the remaining two autographed books, a Marauders figure, and an AngelForge custom parts package. Third Prize: The final autographed book, a collection of Robert Aktins prints, and a $25 BigBadToyStore gift certificate. Fourth Prize: A collection of Robert Atkins prints and a $15 BigBadToyStore gift certificate. Fifth Prize: A Robert Atkins print. Winners will be selected by a poll on the novel's Facebook page. Please check out the page for pictures of the fabulous Atkins art. There are still AngelForge starter packs available for anyone who is interested in participating in the contest; simply contact me after purchasing the book to arrange for your starter pack. |

Can't customize worth a damn but just finished First Salvo last week. Great read. Absolutely loved it. Can't wait for Second Barrage or Return of the Snake or whatever you want to call it. Totally captured that raw GI Joe Element which reminds me of that first year.
Everyone should check it out.

Haven't checked it out yet.
There's lots of stuff up on Kindle World that deserve as much attention. I know Bill is doing this on his own, but if one book can get front paged, they all should. Just my thoughts. I do plan on checking this out at some point, along with all the others on Kindle Worlds. Just once I wish there was a contest that wasn't a custom contest so us non-customizers could get involved. Maybe a contest where write a short story set in the Joe: First Salvo world or something.

Loose Cannon, thank you for the praise. I'm really glad you enjoyed it. I hope to finish the first chapter of the sequel today or tomorrow.
Troynos, I agree that there are some great products coming out that deserve attention. I read Justin Bell's Price of Peace. I have also noticed that there are a number of novels being written by females. I think that is great for our hobby. I'd love to see the G.I. Joe novels start becoming a little more dominant on the top 100 list than Lizzy McGuire (that franchise can't be more healthy than G.I. Joe). I don't think we'll compete with the trashy romances (my wife read an article where some woman is earning $2,000 a month pumping those out). Your idea for another contest is really interesting. I certainly didn't mean to exclude anyone. Joe got this contest off the ground because he says he gets inspired to customize when he watches TV or movies or reads novels. He is the one that lined up all of the great prizes and got the contest off the ground (for which I am really honored and grateful). Maybe another opportunity for non-customizers is in order, though. I wonder if I shouldn't wait to connect it to the sequel. I don't know that I'd feel comfortable asking for more incentives so soon. I'll have to give this some thought. Thank you, though, for suggesting this, and I hope I haven't offended anyone by excluding people. |

Wedge, I've been trying to think of ways to highlight what is being done on Kindle Worlds, just haven't come up with something yet.
Myself, I'm 75% through the first of a series of novellas to put up. Just gotta get through this move so I can finish it and start on the next ones.

Maybe getting together some of the authors who have published and doing a panel at the next JoeCon would be a good idea?
