All,
I didn't see a specific thread for this so I thought it might sense to start one. Some of this discussion has been included sporadically in the other Joecon threads but I thought it woudl be nice to have a separate thread for this. Share your Joecon memories here: good, bad, etc. The show is over now and most of us should be back home, or at least have moved on from Joecon for now. I'd love to hear how the show was for everyone. For me, this was my first ever Joecon and it was a blast. Top moments for me: - OTHER FANS. I was coming up from Southern California and found that there was a huge contingent of us from the SoCal area. Many of us knew each other but some did not. It's funny how sometimes one needs to travel hundreds of miles to get to know people that live only a few miles away. Also, it was great to meet other passionate fans: Carson from 3D Joes who does great work, Jim Sorenson who does some great books, and many others. The people are what really make the con, and that's what would keep me coming back. I was also able to attend the convention with my brother who likes the Joe brand but is not as big a fan. We had a great time hanging out, and it was awesome being able to share this with him. Also, a bunch of folks chipped in and got something for a buddy. He was so happy that he was shaking. I wasn't there at the time, but my buddy sent me a picture and his voice was shaking as he told me the story. I couldn't stop smiling while hearing that, it's great to hear about good con moments like that. - LARRY HAMA. The man is a legend, and I got to hang out with him while helping a friend out at his dealer table. My brother and I sat next to Larry Hama and ended up talking about random things while he was on a lunch break. He was working his butt off to complete sketches for people, so he was very busy and was staying up late at night to finish work. I also got to see how he is treated with great reverence by the fandom, and deservedly so in my opinion. Many people came up just wanting to shake his hand or take his picture and thank him for contributing so much to their childhood. Some people brought their kids to introduce them to Mr. Hama. It was pretty cool. We ended up talking to Mr. Hama about restaurants, living in New York, food and other things. It was a lot of fun, and one of those unscripted moments that only happens at a convention. - FANS HELPING FANS. I missed out on a carded Pythona on the first day because she sold out so quickly. That really bummed me out because I love carded vintage-style figures. However, the next day as I was riding down the elevator I talked to a fan in the elevator who said he was on his way to meet another guy who was selling him a carded Pythona at a good price. He said the seller had multiples and I could maybe ask for one. Well, it turns out that the seller did sell my elevator-mate a carded Pythona at a good price because my elevator mate had been in line all night without getting one. I mentioned that I was looking for one as well. The seller asked if I had been in line the night before, and I confirmed that I had been in line for 7 hours. The seller then asked me to hang out while he ran out to his car, got an extra carded Pythona, and sold her to me at a very good price. I was blown away by the generosity. I didn't get the guy's name, but many thanks to him. I love it when the fandom takes care of its own!! - THE DEALER ROOM. The dealer room had amazing stuff, the giant booth from Chris Neal (?) had so much vintage stuff that it was incredible. I would go in, and not leave because of all the awesomeness surrounding me. The prices were also very good. I got some terrific vintage stuff and had a lot of fun. This was about as close as any of us can get to being back at a TRU in the 1980's. Talking about Joes with the dealers was a lot of fun as well. - THE HASBRO PANEL. This one is highlighted and underscored many times over. I felt that the mood of the convention was a little down, because people believed that this was the final Joecon. The morning of the panel I talked some to Mark Weber and I could tell he was very excited to finally be able to announce stuff officially. When I mentioned I had to catch a plane in a few hours to get back to my family he jokingly advised me to miss the flight because the panel would be worth it. Well, I made my flight but the panel was indeed worth it. Derryl Depriest was describing something at one point and then mentioned how we would hear or see more at "next year's convention." That prompted a lot of frowns and whispers among the crowd. Next year's convention??? What do you mean, we thought this was the last one??!! Then Mark Weber and Derryl Depriest put up a slide saying that Hasbro had renewed its contract with Fun Publications until 2018, so there would be at least two more Joe cons. That prompted some gasps and a lot of wild cheering. I was one of the folks that stood up and cheered long and loud. There was a great emotional release of energy at that point. Then the rest of the panel was full of high points as Mark Weber took us through upcoming releases of new figures that will hit in November. I loved the female figures, and many of the releases that we will be getting. The GI Joe brand is alive and well folks, and I expect that things will get even better as we move forward. The panel was awesome. Being able to cheer loudly along with several of my friends upon hearing the news of more cons and more retail releases was great. "Low points" - HEALTH. My brother showed up sick and overworked. He had a cold, and I caught it too. That was a bummer, we had to call it an early night a few times in order to get some rest. We would have had more time/energy to do stuff had we not gotten sick, but oh well. We were able to make the convention and I can't complain much. - PYTHONA. Hearing that carded Pythona was sold out was a real bummer. We couldn't believe it when it was announced. However, this does lead into a positive, as I was able to get some carded Pythonas due to the kindness of other fans. So the fandom turned a negative into a positive! Thanks to the fandom! I'd love to hear about the experiences that other folks had as well. Please share!

Pythona was shame. I had a golden ticket, but so did most people it seemed. By the time I got to the front, there were two or three damaged cards available and someone got those.
I was in line when a gentlemen with a 12 pack of Fat Tire walked by. I asked how much (somewhat jokingly) and he just gave me one, opened it too. It was delicious. Talked to a gentleman about his company trucks for a while and offered some advice. Hope it was worthwhile. Got most of what I wanted and have helped some folks out with (I think) fair deals. All in all a good time. |

I'm glad you started this. I was thinking that this would be a fun type thread to read through:
"Highs" My wife and I arrived in Denver Thurs. We had my 4 & 7 year old boys in tow. We stayed Thrus with her old college roommate who had boys the same age. I suggested we all attend the parachute drop Fri a.m. and took all the boys up there. The ladies were moaning about the hour drive and just weren't feeling it, since my boys were the only 2 into GI Joe. Well once the excitement started to build all the boys were really anticipating the drop. They all got a figure and were so excited. I think we made new Joe fans out the other two boys, because they were cherishing their new Joes. As we wandered around and I was ogling over the exclusives on display so many attendees were checking to be sure all the kids got a figure. When my son unknowingly cut in the accessory line, there was an attendee there at the front who joked with us about it, then helped make sure the kids got what they needed. There was a cosplayer as Flint and another as Gung-Ho. Both guys posed with my kids and got them so pumped. My wife and her friend were so happy they came out after seeing some of that. After everyone left and it was my son and I Friday p.m. we did some room to room trading. I think every room we visited, the sellers threw in free figures for my son and his little brother who was missing out. They engaged him, asked his favorite characters, vehicles, etc. It was really awesome as a dad, to see my son being brought into the fold. One guy I was texting with told us about the Wordbuglar concert and when I had apprehensions of taking my 7 year old, he assured us it was likely kid friendly. Well, I threw my son's bed time out the window and we drove over to see the show and I think it was the highlight of my son's weekend. He saw the guy he sees singing on Youtube all the time, and to him was basically a movie star. I told my son to go tell Wordbuglar thanks for the show, and 'Burg gave him a CD and was very courteous to my son, even as he was being pulled in 100 directions after the show. Much appreciated! Sales floor was awesome. Lots of questions were answered by dealers. My son was wearing a army outfit, and a guy offered him a GI Joe, velcro name badge for his jacket. Very cool gesture! When I pointed out Larry Hama in the dealer area, my son ran over and told Larry "Thanks for creating my 'Danger at the Docks' set! I love Flint". I started to try to explain how things work to my son, but just decided to let him think Larry creates and packages everything (sort of like Santa) I posted on here about being bitter over missing out on some exclusives and I've received a few messages offering stuff I missed out on at cost. That shows how cool you guys are! "Lows" My son ripping a fart in someones room as we browsed their merch during room to room trading (sorry 412!) My son just being so worn down from standing in lines Sat a.m., that he didn't want to sit through the Hasbro panel, so we missed the announcements. Even though there were things I had issues with as a first timer, I really enjoyed talking to so many people and had a blast! Last edited by Snackattack; 06-21-2016 at 06:39 PM.. |

Thanks to the booth Brian Kauffman was at I was able to get the support legs and missile box stand for my Action Force MMS at a terrific price. I was also able to obtain the wings to a motorized action pack Cobra Copter, a single yellow depth charge for the Piranha and three shells to the Mountain Howitzer. All pieces that have been eluding me for some time.
I found a carded mine sweeper action pack, buttons, posters and some really good signatures from Larry Hama, Larry Selman, Gregg Berger, Adam Riches, Carson Mataxis (3dJoes), Dan Klingensmith Jr. (he even wanted my signature, haha.) Meeting some of you guys. Surprised how many recognized me. Despite having my head buried in a camera during the slideshows, I was still able to hear all the excitement from others with the reveals. That was fun. Getting Grimloc (Gregg Berger) a water at the meet and greet dinner. Listening to all the stories from everyone. Talking StarCom (briefly) with Pat Stewart! Meeting these guys and gals... The custom class and having a guy paint my Bulletman's head for me, he kindly refused payment or a drink for his services. He did a phenomenal job. Getting the opportunity to showcase my diorama. I was in awe at the level of skill showcased there (I didn't have a chance to win! haha) I'm sure I have more... but my camera's at home, lol... the only really bad thing were the prices for the exclusives... I just couldn't do it.

Oh, and the award for the best SWAG goes to JoeCustoms for their business cards that had a cut-out BAT chest piece that was an actual lenticular hologram piece. They also had Sky Patrol logo buttons!

If we learned anything from willy wonka its only a few should get golden tickets and only one was worthy of it in the end.

Good stories guys, I also wanted to add - it was great meeting other fans who are working hard to keep the brand alive. I'm very impressed with the work that Carson is doing from 3D Joes. I encourage everyone to buy his books and posters, outstanding stuff. Also, it was a lot of fun just sitting around anywhere in the hotel and talking collecting, whether it was about Joes, Transformers, Mask, Star Wars, etc. It was great to be around so many other people that share the love and passion for collecting.
