One of the "selling points" the GI Joe franchise is the ninja tussle between black and white.
However, in the original Sunbow cartoon, I never recall Storm Shadow facing Snake Eyes one-on-one. In fact, the only time I've seen them battle is in Resolute and ROC. Is there any classic Sunbow episode (that I may have missed) that shows these two ninjas battle? The closest I remember is Spirit vs. SS... twice. |

Yeah, I don't recall Snakes and Stormy EVER being near each other in any episode... Not sure if I remember the movie too well either! I'm pretty sure even the toon people knew well enough to leave that whole feud to the master

The only time Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow ever exchanged bodily contact was in the beginning bumper for the second mini series "Revenge of Cobra." In there we see Snake Eyes kick Storm Shadow in the back/ass.

In the Revenge of Cobra intro, SE crashes his glider into SS after SS tossed some shuriken at the camera. Sadly, I think that might be the sole example of SE vs SS action in the cartoon.
Edit - as thairestauranteur pointed out a minute before me. :-P

I wonder why? Were the Sunbow makers "saving" the confrontation for the movie, which never happened?
It should be a foregone conclusion that the two would actually meet, especially with all the toys, comics, and merchandising hype. I wonder why it never happened... |

Also, you couldn't really get away with showing a very entertaining (read: realistic) Ninja swordfight/battle in 80's TV. The violence standards for kid's shows were all over the place. The sad part is you could have had Snake-Eyes die in the first Sunbow mini-series and it hardly would've made any difference at all to the rest of the series. Snake-Eyes was pretty much a non-factor there. Basically, we have the Comics to thank for making Snake-Eyes the most popular "core" character in Joe-dom (coupled with his toys always looking the coolest of the Joes -- subjective generalization, of course, but still reasonably true), and we have the Sunbow toons to thank for Duke being the second most popular. While Duke wasn't nearly as much of a non-factor in the comics as Snake-Eyes was in the toons, he was still considerably more downplayed, especially since Hawk was a much bigger (and more active) presence in the comics. |

Mostly because the writers at Sunbow weren't comfortable centering episodes around a mute protagonist. They needed characters that could spout cheesy dialogue and one-liners and portray racial stereotypes.

Snake Eyes, though, was pretty significant in the cartoon, especially in the three mini series. His vocal disability and black costume always gave him an aura of mystery, which is why I think so many were attracted to the character. In Sunbow, he was more "commando" rather than "ninja." |

I don't think it would have been much of a battle, Quick Kick made pretty short work of Storm Shadow in the cartoon.
