I'm rewatching some old episodes of the cartoon and I can't believe I never really noticed before just how incompetent Cobra Commander is...
I mean, there aren't too many competent people on G.I. Joe either...Bazooka? Bazooka is like the mentally challenged member of the team who only got on, because he was the nephew of the director of G.I. Joe or something... Anyway, Cobra Commander is kinda stupid. Every once and a while he'll have a genuinely good plot, but even when he does he ends up foiling his own plans! I was watching the two-parter "Synthoids" and it seemed like everything was going according to CC's plans. The only thing that could have stopped the Synthoids was the remote control that caused the Synthoids to melt if they got out of hand. There was a low setting to melt just one at a time, but the highest setting destorys them all. So of course when Duke and gang show up to stop Cobra, Cobra Commander gets all in a huff and accidentally presses the button destroying all his synthoids!!! Then blames Zartan for some stupid reason... When he's not foiling his own plans out of sheer stupidity, his so called comrades are betraying him left and right only to be right back on his side the very next day. He's the leader of Cobra, but the least qualified to lead an army of ants... Destro doesn't even care when CC has him "taken away". He actually said "Good. Anything to get away from your lunatic ramblings." Sorry for the rant. I know it's just a dumb cartoon, but when you're a kid G.I. Joe is the greatest team ever and Cobra Commander is the scariest person alive! When you rewatch those old episodes though you realize that Cobra Commander was the nerdy kid who got picked on ONE too many times... Instead of beating the jocks in a talent show, Cobra Commander had their families boiled alive. Alright, now I'm ranting even more now. Thanks for reading. |

You really couldn't say episodes in the plural if he was the genius we all wish he had been, would you? I mean, you have more than one episode because he was incompetent. So, don't question your love for the good commander, just thank his stupidity for giving you a multi-disc, $100 plus DVD set that you enjoy watching and over analysing. These cartoons were written to sell comic books and action figures, not route the allied army in northern Africa.

I don't acknowledge the cartoon as canon. I go with the comic CC, because Larry Hama wrote the comic. Since Larry Hama pretty much created Gi Joe as we know it , we should respect his take on CC, rather than the comic relief we got from Sunbow.

Yeah I know it's just a silly cartoon. It's just funny to try and imagine these characters in real life.
And I just think it's hilarious that in a kid's cartoon, not even Cobra Commander's closest allies even like them. When a guy with a metal head and a pimp collared leotard thinks you're crazy, that's saying something... |

I know right? I mean it's like CC's standing there briefing his henchmen going "OK guys it's real simple! First we have to create the most complex tech we can think of. Then we come up with the hrdest way to use it, and if Gi Joe messes with us, then we take their asses prisoner and make them fight it out in some kind of mock-combat situation. Don't worry if none of this works out, we always got next week!"
HA!

I can't judge cartoon CC too harshly, because he really wasn't much/any worse than his "peers" in the other 80's action-adventure cartoons, and the toon-Joes were barely any more competent than Cobra...the only major advantage the Joes had was that they could work together without stabbing each other in the back. Otherwise it was always a bunch of people shooting red and blue lasers at each other and never hitting anything....
You have to remember the time period these toons were coming out. The manufacturers had just found the loophole they needed to get their thirty-minute toy commercials on the air, but they knew the watchdogs were well...watching. That meant the bad guys couldn't be too bad (little or no on-screen killing), and generally were not to be portrayed as admirable in any way, shape, or form. The kids were supposed to idolize Duke and Scarlett and Flint, not Cobra Commander and Baroness and Destro. So that immediately ruled out the insidious and subversive organization of the comics and its' charismatic leader with his "fight the power by seizing the power" message. Don't want the kiddies wanting to grow up to be terrorists, now do we? And of course, the old curse of all ongoing media was fully in play: The bad guys can never win, because if they do the story effectively ends. Unless that's the whole premise of the show (that the bad guys have already won) in which case you ended up with fare like Spiral Zone and Captain Power. Still, in general 80's bad guys were portrayed as buffoons in the cartoons. About the only exceptions were the occasional Japanese import/hybrid (Robotech springs to mind) and those were usually syndicated. Either way, just as the bad guys can never fully "win" the good guys can never just kill off the bad guy...status quo is God. In either case, it really wasn't until the 90's when shows like Pirates of Dark Water, and especially Batman: The Animated Series started portraying the bad guys with a much greater level of maturity and a corresponding level of competence, which meant that the heroes had to be portrayed as much less silly and more competent in their own right, to match them.
