I've heard that they can make the old 80's cartoons into blu-ray format. Has anyone heard if they may got this route? OR is it a waste to by animation on Blu-Ray? I don't understand how much more an animated movie/show can be seen as better.

as i understand it, the problem with a lot of video (especially for television) from the late 70s-early/mid 90s is that it was mastered to tape rather than film (or digital like now), so it's not an easy process to make things from that era into HD. Essentially, you'd have to go back to the film and remaster, which may be cost-ineffective, assuming the original film even exists...

It seems they worked really hard to get them to the quality they are at now on DVD. I think higher resolution would simply show how unclean the remainder is.
Most older theatrical live action films I've seen on BluRay havent been spectacular, and this would likely be much worse. I imagine its why we dont see too many older shows on BluRay. Also, the series are a bit niche for a more expensive format thatbisnt standard. The costs of further remastering them lkkely wouldnt be worth it if it was possible. Animation can look pretty great in Hi-Def, but I think the DVDs look pretty great given the rough around the edges nature of the animation. Resolute would certainly be possible, and would benefit from an upgrade though. |

Pretty much what artiepants said. Lots of television (especially back then) may have been shot either directly on video (sitcoms especially), or shot on film but then transferred to video (as with cartoons and some live-action shows, such as Star Trek: The Next Generation), then edited, mixed, finalized, etc. directly from there. So all that would exist on film would be all the original footage as it was shot.
It's my understanding that the resolution needed for HD just isn't possible from a video source, and it would be far too costly and time-consuming to go back and basically "redo" every episode from scratch using the original film negative. However, in the case G.I. Joe: The Movie and Transformers: The Movie, HD is still possible. T:TM played in theaters, which means a film print was made that could be used as a source to make a Blu-Ray. Even though GIJ:TM didn't play in theaters, a film print of it may still exist. Brian Ward of Shout! Factory has stated that they are looking into the possibility, of that if a film print of it is found they'd be able to release it on Blu-Ray next year as well. |

Transformers the movie 1986 is on Blu Ray already. It is imported from the U.K. and now from Australia. I have the U.K. version and it looks better than all the dvds that have come out.

I hope Hasbro releases something like G.I. Joseph's repainted / kit-bashed B.E.T. coinciding with the Classic Cartoon Movie debut. Hopefully something like Ultimate Battle Pack exclusives at Target.
If you look, there's even a Scooby-Doo DVD exclusive at Walmart, packed with a Ty Beanie Baby of Scooby himself. Walmart can do that too with a DVD exclusive figure of an Artic-Coat Mainframe. Throw in some bonus material to fill the capacious space in the Blu-Ray along with that exclusive action-figure packed DVD and Hasbro got me onboard as a customer. B.E.T. Yeah, like Michael24 said, the movies are a different beast altogether, since they were shot and mastered on Film. BR of TFTM86 will be sweeeeeet.
