I always get so confused with original cartoon season breakdowns. To me the show had three seasons. I think of the first two five part mini series(es) as having been shows first season. Additionally, I've always felt that the episodes that were released on VHS like Countdown for Zartan, Funhouse, and Red Rockets Glare were supposed to be part of the shows first season as well. But they were held back for some reason. That part is just my opinion though.

After a period of time, Sunbow wanted out of the western animation game and wanted to do non-western animated shows going forward. DIC wanted to dominate the animation scene happening in the west, and offered Hasbro to MAKE a new G.I. Joe cartoon, DIC basically did this with all of their shows in that era... give us the OK and we'll make the show for you, which was a much cheaper alternative for said companies who held the IPs all the way around. GI Joe (like other older Hasbro properties at the time) probably would not have got a new cartoon otherwise...

Do you think the quality trade-off between Sunbow and DIC was worth it, or did it hurt the brand more in the long run?

By the time DIC got to G.I. Joe, the landscape was changing for children's programing, due to new laws as to what it could entail. Less violence and more educational values needed to take focus.
