If the cartoon had continued to a third season, and we had finally gotten the brewing civil war between Cobra Commander and Serpentor hinted at in "Into your tent I will silent creep", who do you think would have sided with who?
My guesses: Cobra Commander/The Coil Storm Shadow - Shown to be loyal to CC in season 2, served as his bodyguard and protector and stood by him when he founded the Coil. Firefly - Also stood by CC and helped out with the Coil, defended CC's record to Destro. Destro - No great love for CC, but you can see him regretting the whole Serpentor idea after the botched Washington attack. Later on, he clearly knows CC summoned the monster from his ancestral home to kill Serpentor, but he keeps it quiet, and then shortly after is helping CC with the Coil. Definitely had more power and influence under CC, despite their rocky relationship. The Baroness - Hates CC, but would probably reluctantly side with him due to Destro. Zartan - Could go either way, depending on who paid him the most, but he has always had CC's ear and they have a good relationship, and Cobra Commander already had the Dreadnoks helping with the Coil, so Zartan is aware of what he has going on. Serpentor's Faction Dr. Mindbender - Serpentor's biggest fan, sees him as his greatest achievement and wouldn't abandon him, even if he does think he's a spoiled brat. CC also despises Mindbender and lumped him in with Serpentor in his first speech to the Coil members - Mindbender wouldn't stand a chance if CC ever reclaimed power. Tomax and Xamot - Helped with the creation of Serpentor, and unlike Destro, didn't make amends with CC later on. They would probably side with the "official" leader of Cobra to honour their business arrangements, but likely end up backing the winner. Major Bludd/Wild Weasel/Scrap Iron/Copperhead - The rank and file officers would probably just stick with the official leader of Cobra and continue getting their paychecks, unless CC made them a better offer (but he probably spent all his money on Zartan). |

Destro and the Baroness would have stayed to until they formed the Iron Grenadiers but that might not have happened until the end of season 3 or Season 4 as the Iron Grenadiers did not come out until 1988. I agree that Dr Mindbender would go with Serpentor. I am not sure what would happen to the Crimson Twins. Prehaps this is where Crystal Ball, Big Boa, and Croc Master join Serpentor. I think Major Bludd would stay with Cobra Commander considering he was not seen in season 2 with Serpentor. Scrap Iron I think would go with Serpentor than maybe with Destro if he forms the Iron Grenadiers. I'm not sure what Copperhead and Wild Weasel would do. it is fun to speculate the what if. DIC was awful in bridging the gap between them and Sunbow. |

I'd like to see the Dreadnoks split apart in their loyalties. Zartan and siblings go way, why the Dreadnoks go another. It's not a civil war unless "families" are divided.
Destro would stick with Serpentor but cautiously maneuver as to be the peace maker when one side wins. Baroness would be pro-Serpentor. But I like that Dic showed that she would get "nostalgic" for CC's leadership if her power in Cobra were reduced to so little. She is petty and spiteful normally and when she's scorned...watch out. If we look at Dic, Zartan, the Twins and Mindbender never returned. Did they quit Cobra? Did Cobra Commander want nothing to do with them? Was it because of lack of new toys for them actually. LOL |

DIC had an episode that showed Extensive Enterprise as out of business so perhaps they cut ties with everyone. It was odd that the Dic series showed Gnawgahyde and Road Pig and made no reference to Zartan and the Dreadnoks. Sunbow/Marvel held Hasbro at bay from making the series a complete commercial for new toys but DIc rolled completely over.

Civil War already played out in the comic. Was kind of better than the cartoon tbh.

I'm sort of joking but I also like that idea, that these evil *censored* who betrayed humanity itself were crushed to death. Quote:

Sunbow and Marvel actually cared about the quality of the material they created though, they hired writers and artists that were fed up with the Standards and Practices restrictions and wanted to work in syndication where they could write almost anything they wanted to without the S&P restrictions. In 1989 Hasbro decided to make another cartoon but with significantly less budget. Sunbow was looked at but according to Buzz Dixon: "Hasbro got a ridiculous deal from DiC to take over the series and they pretty much let them." DIC had the same free reign Sunbow did but significantly less quality control than Sunbow. Short Summary of Sunbow: Hasbro hired the Griffin-Bacal Advertising company of New York City to make marketing campaign's for their toys in the late 70s. They made so much money that Griffin-Bacal was able to make their own animation company Sunbow Productions in 1980. Sunbow made the animated commercials for the Griffin-Bacal clients. Though Sunbow was heavily funded by the money it made from Hasbro, its major client, it was its own company under Griffin-Bacal. Sunbow then went on to partner with Marvel productions in California and Toei Animation in Japan and started making full on cartoons, miniseries, and movies at advertiser's requests because shows like He-man were pulling in massive toy sales. For the Animated shows Griffan-Bacal would use Sunbow to take that clients toys and write a script based on the toys designs. Sunbow would subcontract Marvel Production, whose artists would draw storyboards based on the scripts and hire voice actors from Hollywood to record the voice overs. The storyboards and voiceovers would then be sent overseas to Toei animation where it would be animated. Edit: Sometimes Toei Animation would subcontract out the animation to other studios like Akom when their schedule got too full. Hasbro itself didn't care what was in the comics or tv show at the time so long as the millions they paid the ad agency sold the toys at a profit. Hasbro didn't even bother to buy the rights to the shows at the time. Sony bought Sunbow in the 90s and ended up with all the rights to their TV shows from the 80s. The GI Joe shows remained Sony's property until 2008 when Hasbro paid 7 million to buy out all the Hasbro Sunbow shows from Sony. Last edited by sisco; 01-25-2024 at 11:04 PM.. |

Definitely my favourite arc in the comic, but the feud between CC and Serpentor was so much more personal in the cartoon, I really wanted to see them duke it out (rather than Fred just bumbling around in the comic civil war).
