The comic version, Buzz Dixon's unreleased Sunbow episode, "The most dangerous man" or Cobra la, are all different takes of the Cobra origins. The storyline for Dixon's Sunbow episode, "The dangerous man" wasn't that commander didn't start Cobra ans it was not his idea. This is odd since the Commander's filecard literally stated he was the most dangerous man in the world.
It is about another guy who is the most dangerous man in the world. This guy who was imprisoned by the commander under the terrordome. Commander manipulated him and took over the Cobra from him. So the creation of Serpentor is karma for you. None of the rest of Cobra know about this prisoner, not the Baroness or Serpentor. Who is he? Commander's clone, son, evil twin, and alter ego/ personality. This story is another attempt to discredit the commander or stop him from the death penalty?

Dixon didn't make this episode because of the 1984 movie. It claimed Cobra - la were founders of Cobra and maker of Serpentor. Even though, this prisoner in the Cobra Cellar could explain how Cobra- la nobleman was able to infliate a terroist organization without any human knowledge, culture, languages, etc. He didn't get any of Cobra - la biotech weapons which were superior to anything the Joes and Cobras had.

Honestly, I’m not sure I like any of the origins of Cobra. My least favorite is Cobra-La. The idea of Cobra Commander being dishearten because the American Dream didn’t workout for him and he blames the US government is good idea. The part I don’t like is he is a used car salesman. I don’t see how that translate to a paramilitary terrorist leader. The most dangerous man option might have worked if the backstory got fleshed out. Cobra Commander would have needed to be more cunning with military training to make it work.
Maybe combining the most dangerous man with the comic version may have been better. Also there is a part of me that likes not knowing the mysterious origin of Cobra. |

He isn't training his soldiers, he's motivating them. He hires the skills. Besides, he's certainly had them train him also, and we've seen that he spends all his free time doing marksman training.

I tell You what, our very own Wedge did a rough draft for Firefly origins and it was fantastic .
If their is enough interest in his work, I will work with him to get it back in production

Not everything needs an origin story.

Being British, I go with the version that was in our Battle Action Force comics. Cobra Commander was Baron Ironblood the leader of the Red Shadows. He sacrificed the shadows to reinvent himself as Cobra Commander with Destro being the Red Jackel originally.
The redux comics recently published with more angles to this storyline is superb and this is definitely my source for where the terror organisation has come from. |

I think the used car salesman seems off because those types are about presentation, phony smiles, they act like your best friend but want to screw you over. That would work if CC didn't hide his face.
I see Cobra Commander as the guy who put on the mask and found more acceptance and respect as a faceless leader that he would have as his normal self...like. |

Surely the definitive story in GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra put all of this debate to rest.
