Cobra Commander should've stayed dead in the comics. Point blank range, no sleeping phoenix ability. No no-prizing your artist's depiction, either, Larry.
Really, a Joe needed to die in the Borovian failed mission on the gulag, to send that story home. I nominate Snow Job. Scarlett's bullet to her head should've ended her. Then Snake-Eyes could go after the Baroness or she'd die as a result of his vendetta (not by SE's hands because he's still a "hero") , putting firmly Destro back in the villain camp forever. Hawk dying from his wounds in Borovia...yeah...do it. New Joe leadership shake-up. Darklon never should've been "killed" the first time. El Jefe needed to eat a few hundred bullets. |

Hawk dying is a good call, actually. He's mattered less in GIJoe media (go back and watch Sigma 6, they side lined him in the hospital). He's gotten less figures it seems also.
I think killing Lady Jaye really took the air out of Devil's Due back in the day, so female deaths are very tricky with so few of them. You can kill some random c or d lister guy and few will care. |

Scarlett dying would go with Snake-Eyes' bad luck, though. Yeah, the problem is there's so few women in the franchise, killing any seems like a "women in refrigerators" moment
LJ's death was strange as she was part of the early 2000's toy line, unlike Skidmark and Flash (comic pack aside). Hama says they told him to kill Cobra Commander because of the movie (where CC doesn't die but whatever). Imagine Duke's death not being changed, and Hasbro insisting he get killed in the comic. Larry gets to kill Duke (Hama never cared for Duke much). Duke could lead the Borovian mission and die along with or instead of the local resistance guy who dies. We still need Stalker on the mission because it provides a closer Snake-Eyes connection and Stalker has some prime moments in that arc. |

Like I said in my earlier post, Larry wanted to show that death happens suddenly and randomly and it doesn't care whose in its path. |

Also felt bad for Doc. Poor bastard. Peers out of the foxhole to see what's going on and gets his head blown right off for the trouble. And yeah, you could argue he shouldn't have even been there, but my counter to that is, if he wasn't an excellent soldier, he'd have never been on the team in the first place.
That wasn't Larry Hama, it was Brandon Jerwa. And it was definitely a "Women in Fridges" moment, because the storyline became all about how Flint would handle Lady Jaye's death. |

The whole "women in fridges" thing irks me. Villains are often going to attack the heroes by targeting their loved ones and when your heroes are mostly male, those loved ones are going to be mostly female. That's just how it is. I've seen instances of female heroes having a male loved one killed too, so it works both ways.

I haven't read it in almost 30 years, but I remember quite liking that initial Kyle Raynor run that had the "fridge" storyline in it.
I was the target audience I guess. Angsty teen. This dude shows up and he looks like me, wearing a NIN t-shirt just like me. I fell for it! At the time, people were more concerned about how Hal Jordan was treated in that story than the dead girlfriend. I'm sure if I went back and re-read it, it'd all be painful cringe now, but at the time I thought it was a great way to shake things up. |

I never understood why a fan would desire to see the heroes of their childhood toys die. Haven’t read this thread, just my two cents on the topic.

I don't think anyone "wants" their heroes to die.
I think it's a natural thing for kids to want the media/toys they love to at least deal with death and have SOME characters die. Without it, there's zero stakes. It gets stale and boring really quick. The Joe cartoon was so sanitized. The parachutes from the planes is such a cliche people even normies talk about it today. Transformers the Movie changed the stakes. Characters DIED and it was brutal. It let little kids feel like they were experiencing something new and exciting. I was SOOO into TF after the movie. It was a dark, gritty show for "grown up" kids, not that baby shit like GI Joe with parachutes. Even the Japanese cartoon imports like Voltron and Robotech were more interesting cause characters could actually die on those shows. "Safe" shows like GI Joe weren't that different from Jem or Care Bears. |

Shooter should have survived "Declassified." Give us more adventures of her saving the day from the shadows before leaving the team or something, then joining up in "modern" times.
Buzzer should have been killed, either by Ripcord for Candy, or Mutt for slicing Junkyard. Or Zartan for the times Buzzer undermined his authority. |
