I will set aside the mini-series, the movie....
Top 10 episodes in no particular order: The Funhouse - Cobra Commander is having a lot of fun in this episode and the themed traps are enjoyable. We also see tenson between Baroness and Zartan (oh, I forgot, you get paid by the hour!). Twenty Questions - Shipwreck just has to prove Hector Ramirez wrong, of course, this also features Cover Girl in her role as foil for Shipwreck. Haul Down the Heavens - There's quite a bit of set pieces in this episode, Firefly causes some havoc, and we have a polar bear as a bit of a third party spoiler. Flint and Lady Jaye are a couple and Flint really doesn't know how to deal with that at times. Synthoid Conspiracy 2 Parter - This ist a good one as you really see the Joes demoralized throughout it. Also, interesting to see that the synthoids as a weapon developed by Cobra Commander and Zartan, not Destro. The Gamesmaster - This is one of the better episodes of subverive humor with the Gamesmaster serving as a stand in for over obsessive adult toy collectors. The Germ - We get some Cobra on Cobra violence and then an out of control threat to civilization GIJoe has to deal with. Shipwreck I believe actually comes up with the solution (Candy coated poison). And we get more fun Shipwreck and Cover Girl interaction. Skeletons in the Closet - We get the cartoon's take of Destro's backstory and Baroness can be vindictive. We also learn Lady Jaye and Destro are related. My Favorite Things - A proper Serpentor episode in terms of his obsessions and also we see the lengths both Lifeline and Wetsuit go to save the life of a friend. Nightmare Assault - There's always been something interesting about Low Light and the abuse his father inflicted on him. This episode works well with Mindbender creating a weapon to terrorize GIJoe. Sin of Our Fathers - Cobra Commander firmly playing the role of "the Starscream" here as he attempts to create a means to destroy Serpentor. Dial-Tone as this barely GIJoe worthy is quite interesting as well. (I think The Gods Below may be the single worst episode of Sunbow GIJoe) Last edited by Dust Viper; 07-27-2022 at 11:43 AM.. |

I haven't watched them all, but I have been going through season 1 lately. I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with all the Sunbow cartoons (Transformers, Jem, etc.) but Joe is the one the jives the least with my personal interpretation so it's always a little weird to watch. That said, there are some episodes I have fond memories of from when Hasbro was putting them out during the 25th anniversary.
The Traitor was entertaining, and Clay Moore was a neat Cobra lieutenant (one of the few show-exclusive characters I've known of for a long time). Since Gray Hairs and Growing Pains was mentioned, I think the writers may have had something going on with fetishizing Lady Jaye, between the end of that episode, her coming away with a Cobra Trooper's underwear at the end of this two-parter, and her telling Hawk about a what was probably a naked nightmare involving singing the national anthem. Nightmare Assault was also a fun ep tho. Cold Slither is probably the one I enjoy the most, even if it's incredibly campy and the song is actually kinda shit (the Tankified cover does it justice). Something about taking the Noks and just full-sending them into M?tley Cr?e, I really enjoy it. Also CC kicking around the director, and Firefly showing off his contacts while having the worst disguises for him and the Commander. I think for a while that scene actually had me convinced CC and Rorschach were probably related in some way. Gamesmaster is also fun for, aside from bikini Baroness, showing the Joes and Cobras cooperating...even if Zartan is a bit of a pushover in it for my tastes (a general problem with the show, and not limited to him). Oh, and the final episode was neat, the one that introduced The Coil, where CC was working with a bunch of characters who no longer had toys on the shelves to take back control of Cobra. Always nice to see Firefly. Also, funny that since then, The Coil has usually been Serpentor's faction. |

Revenge of Cobra was my introduction to G.I. Joe. I watched it so many times that I wore a hole in the tape. Then I kept watching it with a chunk of the movie missing. I love pretty much everything about it.
My favorites from the series are: The Traitor - For my money, the best two-parter and the one where CC quotes Stalin, too. The Wrong Stuff - pretty sure this is my favorite Cobra scheme. Cold Slither - Rockin' Dreadnoks, Cobra being "broke," CC and Firefly going incognito. The Gamesmaster - The fact that they kept Baroness in a bikini through the whole episode never ceases to amuse me. The Gamesmaster was an interesting villain that I really, really, really wanted to see come back in Season 2. The ending with the Joes and Cobras arguing over who is going to leave the island first always gets a laugh out of me. Cobra CLAWs are Coming to Town - I love Christmas, and I love Christmas episodes. And giant parrots. The Phantom Brigade - Works well as a Halloween episode, and I'm a big fan of the fact that Baroness is worried that she's going to lose her job to a trio of ghosts. Lasers in the Night - I'm not sure if it's CC's "face on the moon" plot or Destro's reaction to said plot that gets me the most. Worlds Without End - So much to love in this one. Cobra Monuments. Convenient portals. Kind Baroness. Insane Steeler. I wrote an article about it earlier this month, actually. (Shameless plug: https://doubtfireblog.wordpress.com/...s-without-end/) My Favorite Things - I'm not a big Season 2 fan, but I always liked this one for some reason. Cobrathon - The concept alone makes this one a must for me. Into Your Tent I Will Silently Creep - I was so excited by the prospect of two warring factions in Cobra, and, after it aired and the station started the G.I. Joe: The Movie five-parter the following week, I truly thought that it would revolve around a Cobra Civil War. It didn't. At all!

Fun reading through this thread as I've been rewatching the series on DVD lately. The latest episode that registered with me is the 2 parter 'World Without End' which I've seen mentioned by a few guys here. Being that the Joes find themselves in an alternate universe in which everything is wrong and Cobra rules the world with an iron fist makes for a Twilight Zone-esque premise. It is also reminiscent of Chris Claremont's "Days of Future Past" X-Men arc which also came out around that time.
Anyway, I'm a sucker for dystopian future/timeline stories, and this 2 parter really scratches that itch for me. It feels so much darker than I was anticipating. I'm sure I saw it as a kid when it originally aired, but I can appreciate a lot more of the nuance and themes in these episodes nowadays than I did as a kid. It's a classic Joe story, but with a dark sci-fi angle that makes it stand out from the pack. |
