Talking about the weaponry from the original MASS Device mini-series, they not only fired live rounds, but the FLAK also fires shells. In that mini-series there are several instances where it is implied that Cobra troopers died without being obvious.
I'm sure some family group got involved about that and that is why everything went to lasers and and parachutes afterward. One thing that got me with the MASS Devices mini-series, and I've mentioned this over the years in other threads, but as a kid, I had no idea who Duke was. I wasn't a member of the Joe Fan Club, so I didn't get the magazines, and I never saw the mail-away offer in any vehicles. So, honestly, I don't know if Duke appeared in the cartoon first or was announced in the Fan Club magazine first. But as a kind, all of the sudden there is this new guy leading the Joes, and Hawk was mysteriously missing. So, for me, this kind of gave Duke that Boba Fett-Holiday Special intrigue, which is why I like the original look of this character the best. Sunbow did the same thing for Flint, Lady Jaye and Shipwreck in the Revenge of Cobra mini-series as well. Flint, to me, was portrayed as more of the tougher, battle-hardened soldier. So, again with the Boba Fett-Holiday Special intrigue, and Flint & Lady Jaye remain my 2 favorite Joes to this day. Jason |

They didn't always have Spirit and Storm Shadow fighting each other. Really it's just Revenge of Cobra and Countdown for Zartan, maybe Cobra's Candidate (Unless I'm forgetting an episode, which is possible). SS fights QK in at least 3 situations (Pyramid of Darkness, Cobra Quake, Excalibur). Not sure why people act like it was always Spirit.

Lazy writers. As a child, I found everything Snake Eyes did to be absolutely fascinating in large part because there was always an ambiguity about his state of mind thanks to his muteness, but that's difficult to write. Far less taxing on the writer's room to just swap him out with Spirit and let the latter trade hackneyed quips about honour with Storm Shadow.

I always figured that his original, normal English speaking voice must have sounded something like Quick Kick in the cartoon, minus the goofy affectations, since the Vietnam flashbacks in the comics seemed to lend the impression that, prior to the Arashikage imploding, Tommy was a fairly cheerful (maybe even jolly) sort of guy.

That's kind of suggestive of some amount of research on Sunbow's part, but I guess they didn't get the memo that Stormie is (for all intents and purposes) a native English speaker? Then again, he might not have wanted Cobra Command to know that he could speak perfect, unaccented American English...

Before the whole comics backstory in issues 26/27 there was no reason SS couldn't be just Japanese and not Japanese-American (Though I don't really recall anything about it in the show either way.) There's nothing in the file card about his birthplace or nationality or anything. Sunbow definitely would've had their SS in place before 26 and 27.

Everyone can drive, fly, or sail anything. This always got on my nerves. Even as a kid I knew better. I didn't like that more than the parachutes for the hang gliders.

Agreed. And I didn't mind that Lady Jaye was a commando beneath her suit (judging from that low zipper). Flint had one of the coolest figure designs.
Or deep-sea dive. Quote:
Sunbow could've done an interesting spin on LH's Silent Interlude, by including an episode "narrated" by Snake-Eyes's internal voice. This was popular in the '80s (Magnum, P.I. did it every episode). |

Ha - I loved how they went deep sea diving in scuba gear. And I also agree on everyone being able to handle every kind of vehicle.
A couple of my other favorites:

They could've given Hawk a proper introduction. Instead, enter season 2...and he's just there.

Sort of like how Stalker, Snake-Eyes, and other original characters stopped going on missions. I prefer to think of Season 2 as the NCIS:LA of the Joes. Everyone knows the original is better. They're just waiting on the crossover episode.
