In terms of what the creatives in LA were pushing for, I don't know. From a cold, hard business standpoint, I don't think there would have been another full season.
The one thing that was set in stone at the start of 1985 (announced in the press releases etc) was that GI Joe would eventually go to 100 episodes. The 1987 trade adverts promised the movie AND a new miniseries. In the end, the half-hour edits of the movie fulfilled the rest of the contract. So I believe the plan for both Joe and TF was to have one more miniseries each and call it a day. |

I think David Thornton was also behind this site: JoeGuide.com - A G.I.Joe Cartoon Guide There's a treasure trove of stuff on there, interviews, a few storyboards, etc. It hasn't been updated in 15 years, though.
It does have some info on AWOL's question about s3 in a 2000 interview with Buzz Dixon: Quote:
"DT: How far along was the production process for Sunbow's third season when the plug was pulled?
BD: We never got beyond preliminary discussion stages. Mike Hill had come up with an interesting new angle and I encouraged Hasbro to go with it, even though I felt it was time for me to move on to other projects. DT: Were any there any plots or outlines for stories created for the third season? BD: Outside of Mike’s basic idea and a few minor plot concepts, no." Yeah, I've grabbed all the production material off of both sites (cartoonpaperwork hasn't been touched since 2011). Better that than going there one day to find the site has gone down and everything is lost.
Unfortunately, he password-protected all of the joeguide material, so I can't do things like merge the three parts of the Cobra Stops The World script. Nor straighten the crooked pages of the Flint's Vacation storyboard. |

From what I understand, Sunbow/Toei became to expensive to partner with, hence the switch to DIC/AKOM?

Abandoning Sunbow for DiC happened because first there was a slump in syndicated ratings (Sunbow were still on top, but on top of a smaller mountain) in Autumn '86. Then followed by a slump in retail orders coming out of Toyfair '87. The toy industry as a whole was looking for the exit door when it came to funding full-length animation beyond existing contracts. Which is where DiC swooped in, as they offered to do it for pennies on the dollar (with results to match). |

Not to the former, as that happened in '85. Marvel were already looking for cheaper options, moving Defenders Of The Earth from Toei to Sei Young after just two episodes.
The latter? No doubt, that was a factor. Along with the market being oversaturated. Hasbro alone launched 4 new "Boys Toys" lines alongside Joe and TF, hoping to find a successor. Come 1988, all 4 were gone. |

Was the movie considered a flop?

The Joe movie? Never had a chance to find out as it went straight to VHS and syndication.
Buzz Dixon explained last year that the distribution deal Sunbow had with DEG on Transformers The Movie was as follows: 5 weekend showings per cinema. Three on Saturdays, two on Sundays What they actually delivered was two on Saturdays, one on Sundays. It was the dispute over that that led to the Joe movie not going to cinemas. |
