Another name we can't forget is Ron Friedman, who, if I'm not mistaken, laid the groundwork for Sunbow's take on G.I. Joe.

That's what he would say, but judging by what we can see of the first briefing binder they sent him. It was more like THEY laid the groundwork down to HIM:

I've heard the push for the '87 movie to focus on Cobra-La came from Griffin-Bacal. How much of that is true? |

Im not sure, the development of the Joe movie prior to the final script is something of a black hole. Most of the Joe material that came from these auctions ended up with David Thornton of cartoonpaperwork.com. Who launched the site, and it seemed like he was going to upload everything on the list, but he seemingly vanished a decade ago:

Something that I'm sure will interest viewers of this thread. An ebay store is selling off items from Marvel productions alumni Brian Ray. Previously it had just been D&D model sheets, one page at a time. Now things have taken a step up with the full storyboard for Cobra's Creatures: https://www.ebay.com/itm/12474169274...cAAOSwaM9grWWL

The one thing that was set in stone at the start of 1985 (announced in the press releases etc) was that GI Joe would eventually go to 100 episodes. The 1987 trade adverts promised the movie AND a new miniseries. In the end, the half-hour edits of the movie fulfilled the rest of the contract. So I believe the plan for both Joe and TF was to have one more miniseries each and call it a day. |
