The fact that Roadblock would rap was a big deal IMHO. Rap was still seen as niche and many didn't see it as a genuine artform and/or commercially viable until the 90's. Or course NY was the epicenter of rap so I'm sure the writers were hip to it.
I remember all the kids in my school loved Roadblock. He was PG without being corny. If anything he was probably inspired more by Ali than Dolemite. |

Due to my frequent use of this brutal and corse piece of profanity I have to inform you that you spelled it wrong. In this context the street colloquism for a man with Oedipal tendencies is spelled m-u-t-h-a-f-u-c-k-a and it's not pronounced with a hard "r." LOL.

Either way, that particular Dolemite-ish character is part of the "Blaxploitation" thing of the 70s and a sort of trope unto itself. In a real sense, the Sunbow guys were just layering "jive-talk" onto the Roadblock character.

With Eddie Murphy's "My Name is Dolemite" out there, this is probably contemporary again:
As a kid, I remember thinking (animated) Roadblock's rhyming speech was based on Muhammad Ali. "He wanted to go to heaven, so I took him in seven", etc. Yet, when I got older and finally saw "Dolemite" on ENCORE in the late 90's, it hit me that the cartoon creators may have been going for Dolemite instead of Ali. I always thought Roadblock was cool, but he was suddenly even cooler. Not a direct borrow, but I feel some of Roadblock's (animated) lines may have been inspired by Rudy Ray Moore and Dolemite. I mean: "I don't need to see clear...to fracture your rear". What are some other Roadblock quotes that could pass off as Dolemite lines?

Knew it early on as I seen some blaxploitaion films that that what was he's mirroring and loved Roadblock for it and thought it was a brilliant choice by the production. I also find it hilarious that comic fans complains about Roadblock's rhyming like it's a stupid concept.
