I'm disappointed Shout! apparently couldn't get Bill Ratner or Mary McDonald-Lewis for interviews (when Rhino did), but am glad there's more on the set than Rhino ever included. And I always enjoy hearing from Michael Bell, a voice acting legend. |

Best of both worlds: ROBOTECH!
It had transforming robots, military themes and storylines way ahead of their time! When most cartoons were episodic, with the occasional 2 or 5 parter robotech was an 85 part space drama! |

This guy's blog here pretty much sums my feelings, for the most part, of why I also prefer G.I. Joe over Transformers. I watched both as a kid, but only Joe has stuck with me all these years later.
oh and as an update on my opinion, I love my Joe...but until this ROC thing passes over I am collecting Transformers again.

I saw both series when they first aired and the joes were a stronger series than transformers. and again cost was the main factor. A joe with all its accessories was less expensive than a transformer. So what I did was buy joes and build transformer-like robots, both for my joes to ride around in and as straight out transformers. But what I'd like to point out was the links that happened between both series. In one episode of transformers, they were watching TV and their TV showed a few seconds of a group of human soldiers fighting a group of reptilian aliens: The human leader, who was a dead ringer for duke, shouts "Lets get those snakes!" which was used on the joe series. And in another episode of transformers, terrorists are plotting to blow up the transformer-city robot, and with them is an older man with his face partially obscured, but the plot is uncovered, the terrorists caught, except for the older man. The episode ended with the man walking away and saying that it was better when he was younger, then he begins to shout "Co..." then breaks out coughing. A former member of Cobra or was it Cobra Commander himself?

Yes, that was supposed to be Cobra Commander himself. I believe an older Flint (voiced again by Bill Ratner) also made a guest appearance in an episode of Transformers as well.

I have been a Transformer fan sence the G2 days, (DoB 1988), I always loved G1... er 2. When I got the Madman releases, the first time I had seen it in oh, 10yrs beyond More The Meets The Eye, which I bought on tape, I loved alot of it, the weaker episodes were damn weak though. Eventualy, I could slim the entire series down to roughly 26-39 eps.
I also had some Joes from the Ninja Force and a 12' Destro. I never realy thought about it until I got the net. Eventualy I downloaded The Mass Device and Arise, Serpentor, Arise, I loved both, the Mass Device more though. Yeah, I found the show astoundingly similar, but something felt better. Now I have a partial S1 release(Bastards at Magna Pacific) and want to get the American Complete Boxset. I enjoyed a great deal of the episodes, yes, there were some clunckers, but all shows have that. So yes, I agree, as a long time TF fan, GI Joe is a far better series. Also a better fanbase too. Don't have people rattling off about how the first cartoon is god's gift to mankind and such, as what happens with TF G1. EDIT: About the reviewer's Transformers review, even my friend who only realy likes Transformers(out of TF and Joe) agrees with the reviewer, G1 is painful till the point it's unwatchable. But my mate likes the Japanese Trilogy, so yeah. Last edited by Shinobi Sentai; 07-28-2009 at 07:54 PM.. |

Transformers was sort of like Thundercats in that the characters and overall idea were great. The GI Joe episodes were better though, but I would much rather watch a Transformers or Thundercats episode than just about anything else (sitcom or whatever) so it's all good.

According to Hasblos own numbers at its peak Transformers had 15 million fans. G.I.Joe had 25 million.
The writing for the first Joe series were excellent. In 85 when they went to a daily series, I believe they cut corners somewhat and the quality of the story writing and animation suffered. You compound this with a daily Transformers show plus Jem, Inhumanoids, Visionaries, and maybe a couple others; the animation company had its work cut out for them and they had to pump them puppies out pretty quick. Obviously the animation suffered. However, in its prime in 83 and 84 for the 2 original mini series, the animation and writing for excellent.
