I never heard the source material, but WOJM said that in an interview it was noted that Renegades was precancelled even before the voice actors recorded their first lines of dialogue. Anyone know the story on this?
Hasbro being an idea machine was true back in the 80s when they had Jim Shooter and the then great Marvel machine supporting them, but they can't seem to do much anything right at the moment (maybe My Little Pony is killing it?). |

I liked Renegades. I would have liked to see it continue, especially since we were getting new figures from the series. It would have been great to see the versions of Flint, Lady Jaye, etc. released in the show’s likeness. Not to mention the vehicle the Joes used.
As many have said, being on a short-lived, failed network, The Hub, likely doomed this series.

Watching it for a second time as I type. It really is a great representation and I love the A-team feel. If they ever make a GI Joe 3 movie than they should just follow this story model.

I always thought that as well. I may be incorrect but I believe The Hub was one of those channels that were not part of the basic cable package. As a kid it is something my parents never would have had so I'm sure a bunch of kids at the time it aired never saw it. Combined with the fact that the toys did not come out until a year or so after it aired didn't help that part of it either.

The premise and some of the ideas in it were interesting, and I enjoyed the experience of following a new GI Joe series and chatting about each episode on these forums--but in the end, there were just too many factors working against it that compromised its overall quality, fan interest, and longevity.
I think they are okay, many of the other 30th figures were better IMO. I do remember that 2011 JoeCon or SDCC, first time seeing the 30th and Renegades lines, Hisstank was so active, so amped, it was such a cool and exciting time. Then early 2012 hit, the lackluster Retaliation line was revealed, and the decline began. Man, I'm waxing nostalgic, aren't I. Can't believe it's been so many years.

I really enjoyed the show when it came out... Watched every episode on tv...
I'd really like to watch them again but I fear there's no way to purchase the show out here in Europe... The DVD sets are either zone 1 or 4 and the blu ray sets are region A... There is of course a chance that the region A-marked blu ray sets are region free after all since if I remember correctly (unlike DVDs) all blu rays are region free by default except if the manufacturer decides to region lock them... For example, my Rise of Cobra blu ray is marked as region A NTSC but plays without problems on my European PAL Playstation... Sadly, the only way to know is to actually try it out... Does anyone out here know if the Renegades bly-u ray set is indeed region free? |

To this day I still don't understanding the thinking behind it. I mean, they obviously wanted to do something different, but that "different" was really just a complete rip-off of the A-Team story. If you're just gonna be unoriginal and copy something else, you may as well copy yourself from when you were most successful. |

First post here. Huge fan of the short-lived G.I. Joe Renegades cartoon. It was a re-boot of the ARAH storyline, and they really kept a lot of what made the original characters/story great, while updating it for the 21st century. Great animation, music, characterization, etc.
- First of all, the music was amazing, especially the opening theme - great new hard-edged sound, and in some ways makes me feel that I'm watching an '80's cartoon with a 21st century vibe/tone, which I guess is the point. - Really enjoyed the tech/vehicles in this show! The black Cobra helicopter, the slick Cobra hovercraft used during the swamp battle in Mississippi, all of the laser guns, rifles, etc. were fantastic. Also, the revamped H.I.S.S. tank (from the POC toyline) is one of my favorite new vehicle designs, so I really liked seeing that vehicle featured. And, I really liked the episode where Jinx was in that body-armor & on that hi-tech motorcycle; this also reminded me of one of the POC toys that came out a while back. - I was & am a huge fan of the '80's ARAH comics, and have either disliked or despised most other subsequent incarnations of G.I. Joe if I felt they didn't pay attention to the ARAH mythos (a good example of this was the IMHO execrable 2009 ROC film, which really messed up the whole ARAH mythology/uniforms, etc. - but, that's another thread). However, in Renegades, I really liked all of the nods/homages to ARAH; and, in some ways I felt this series both built on ARAH while at the same time even being superior to it in certain aspects. - Going along with the above, I really liked the new character designs for Duke, Snake-Eyes, Flint, Scarlett, Destro, Cobra Commander, Baroness, Jinx, Zartan, Major Bludd, etc. These were new outfits, but at the same time still reminded me enough of the originals - Good job here. It's too bad that the show didn't last longer, because I would have really liked to have seen figures of Destro, Major Bludd, Baroness, etc. based on their look in this series. -Really enjoyed the origin of "Zartan", and felt it was the best explanation we've gotten as to why he has the shape-changing abilities (his chameleon abilities were never explained in the '80's comic). -Been a big fan of "Snow Job" since reading G.I. Joe #11 back in early '83 & getting the great ARAH figure (still one of my favorite figures); so, the episode featuring him as a recluse living in a arctic cabin was great. -Major Bludd was fantastic in this series, and it was interesting that in his final scene, it was implied that his arm?! was presumably missing (after the fight with the alligator/croc), which was an obvious homage to the character's mechanical?! arm in the '80's comics. -It was cool to have Heavy Duty & Roadblock related, though not sure if this was in the original ARAH series or created for Renegades. -Snake Eyes was obviously one of the highlights of the series, and was an even more mysterious character here than he was in the original comics. His ninja abilities were a lot more in play here than previously. - Going along with the above, I liked the connection between Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow, & Jinx; the Arashikage storyline was obviously an homage to the similar storyline from the comics. -The sci-fi elements (i.e. biovipers, M.A.S.S. device) didn't seem out of place, since the original comic series had a lot of sci-fi elements (especially in later issues). It's a damn shame this show didn't last beyond one season. There is obviously a lot more that could've been done with this series, and I felt they barely scratched the surface re: the show's potential. |

Such a waste. The tone of the show was spot-on. And it was fun spotting all the easter-eggs. Season 2 would have had the Joes fully-formed I assume... |
