oh you mean in the poll? Extreme. Don't get me wrong I loved Sunbow for what it was. Extreme though had the best serial writing. Every story connected or could reference a past story. The story of Wreckage, a complex character, took more than one episode to tell. It also was perfect for the time it was created. It was Hasbro's attempt at competing with the 90's era of Savage Dragon and X-Men cartoons. Extreme had a lot of battles to fight. A change in scale and style for the toys (Thanks Batman TAS) New characters and a new team. A completely new enemy, although SKAR was in touch with Cobra. Animation style change. Set in the future. It was not on daily, it was on weekly, which gave us only 13 episodes a season for a total of 26 episodes. It was to be blunt, too many changes for people. It was stuck right after the end of the 94 line and people were not accepting to the changes. Perhaps if it had been a decade later with nothing between, it would have stood on its own. But by then, that style of animation was done. It was a good concept, the timing was just not right. I was twentysomething when Extreme arrived on the scene. It was new and exciting and I watched it every week.

I love the original, and not just for the nostalgia--even though that's a huge part of it--but also because I think it holds up surprisingly well. It's right up there with the original Jonny Quest as a toon I can pop in when I have a free moment and feel like a kid again. It was such a hoot to open up the MASS device sets and watch the original mini-serieseseses for the first time in 2 decades...I actually have a strong bit of recent nostalgia for that experience. The music, the art, the voices, stories and action is all wonderful in my book.
After that, Renegades. It was a fun, well thought-out series that vibes in a similar way to the Sunbow series with me. It deserved at least another season, I think. |

the original series that started it all. Nothing can replace it.
