Rather than a cartoon, a live action show following ARAH continuity (agents of shield, etc.) would do better.

A live action GI Joe for the adult fans who grew up with it, like something along the lines of Strike Back or 24 could work, but this is Hasbro, it's about selling toys. Resolute was great, lot of old fans loved it, but you know Hasbro knew that it wouldn't have been sustainable series to continue for selling toys to kids, which is their primary market.

Absolutely! I actually thought of this idea years ago when they started that horrible Chad Tatum movie, renegades, resolute and all that. To me the original comic run is still the official story and still the best stories. OK not every comic story is great and worthy of an episode, but over all most of them are.

In one word...NO.
Quote:
A children's cartoon has to appeal to the children FIRST or it will fail. ARAH will not appeal to today's children any more than the GI Joe's of my generation would appeal to the children who loved ARAH and are adults now. The chemistry is just not there. The fact that Hasbro has repeatedly failed to understand that in the toy line itself has resulted in its current "hibernation". When Hasbro re-launches GI Joe, it will have to be a complete reboot - just like in the 80's or it will flounder yet again. |

Adaptation? Absolutely. The basic premise and story ideas are great. With better dialogue and exposition than the comics it would be awesome.

If you want the show to appeal to kids but still be of interest to adults I think it could work if the tone of the show was on the level of Batman The Animated Series. That was an Emmy winning show that had a huge fan base and also sold lots of toys. Hasbro would be happy with that scenario.
If the show was kept on something like adult swim, then a show like Gi Joe resolute would be awesome. |

Straight adaptation? Probably not.
Taking the main concepts of it and adapting the specific storylines? Yes. You can use basically all the characters as-is (though Vietnam becomes Afghanistan or Iraq, etc) and have the general premise of "secret elite military group confronts (terrorist) organization determined to rule the world" pretty effectively. All the major touch points still work: Disillusioned "common man" CC trying to overthrow the system. Snake Eyes vs. Stormshadow with classic backstory. Initially small team adding more members and specialists every year to combat the growing threat in new ways. Ridiculous "near future" technology and vehicles. G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra got SOME of this right, but lost the parts that made the characters unique. And much though many ARAH fans will hate this, the move to make it a cooperative international team (with a heavy US presence) as opposed to purely American is better reflective of modern reality and will help grow the brand internationally which is essential. |

As an anime on Adult Swim or even Netflix I think it could be successful. There was way too much killing for it to run as a kid's show on any of the regular channels- once you try and make it kid friendly then it's just a remake of the old toon. but it's a big investment for a show that wouldn't be aimed at the toy buying market- I doubt the financials are worth it to Hasbro. still, anything is possible.
I'd watch the heck out of it. |

No, the tounge-in-cheek humor of the 80's cartoon is what it made work (which they overdid with DiC) and remains to be a major sticking point for comic fans.
