This is something that I've always wondered? Why wasn't Hawk in the first season of G.I. Joe? How is that Duke became the CO until Hawk was included?
Why wasn't Snake Eyes given a bigger role in the animated series? I should've asked him this at the Big Apple Con, but why didn't Larry Hama include Duke in more issues of G.I. Joe. My guess is that combined with having to include toys coupled with the story lines he intended for the book, Duke got lost in the shuffle. My theory on why Duke was the Joes CO until Hawk was included is because the writers felt Duke had that "all American," look. |

Hawk was a plain figure until the 2nd release, which is when he showed up in the cartoon. Duke had the "all-american" boy look so they wanted to use that.
Hama hated Duke. He never wanted Duke in the first place. Stalker was always intended to be Hama's First Sargeant for the Joe team. Duke was forced onto Hama by Hasbro. That's why he got "lost in the shuffle", it was because Hama didn't like the character. First mini-series was Duke, 2nd mini-series was more Flint (with Duke a prisoner thru most of it). During the season it was Flint/Duke trading off. Snake-Eyes, most likely the writers at the time didn't know how to handle a mute character and didn't use him as much. There was an interview with Hama about the new IDW series and he said that he was looking forward to being able to make Duke and Hawk more then two dimensional. Pretty sure having Duke in the IDW series was more of a Hasbro push. For whatever reason, Duke has become the "leader" of the Joe team. When people think leader or 2nd-in-command they think Duke. Duke isn't even the highest ranking sargeant on the team.

I imagine Hawk wasn't in the first mini-series was because Duke was a mail-away figure before his release. I'm sure Hasbro wanted to promote Duke all they could without being overshadowed by Hawk. That's also why most people who only watched the cartoon think Duke has such a large roll.

I would also imagine the fact that the cartoon premiered on September 12, 1983 would be a factor as to who we saw in it. These were commercials for the toys and you had to try to showcase some of the newer toys like Gung-Ho, Airborne and the new mail away, Duke.

And the next series had Flint showcased and Duke took a backseat. And when they had the first daily season, it was a trade off between the two on who was in charge. Some episodes would be Duke, some would be Flint.
Then Hawk showed up.

When growing up I always thought of the comic as canon... and in that Hawk was always there. Probably one of the characters that was in almost every issue. He was the leader. That's why he became my favorite Joe, he was an awesome leader in the book.
So when it was all Duke in the cartoon, it bugged me. When Hawk finally showed up I thought it was about damn time! |

remember too that in the toy line Hawk really wasn't all that special on his first release. He was pretty much a generic vehicle driver that happened to have the highest rank. (did he even appear in the cartoon until his 86 version?)
I was a comic guy though, so he'll always be the real team leader to me. :-)
