It's name is a reference to Shangri-La from the book Lost Horizon.
The reason Cobra-La exists is because of Serpentor. Hasbro told the Sunbow cartoon editor Buzz Dixon to add "The Emperor" to season 2 of GI JOE. Dixon was like "Who is that?" Hasbro said he was Cobra Commander's boss who has been there all along, just unseen. Dixon told them there was no hint of anything beyond Cobra Commander. So Hasbro said to find a way to introduce him. Dixon pitched them two ideas, the first that he was created from the DNA of dead leaders. The second was that there was a secret organization behind Cobra. Hasbro chose both, much to Dixon's annoyance. And they liked the name "Cobra-La", which Dixon has said was just a generic place holder name that he thought was so dumb sounding that no one would run with it. |

Now you may get some negative feed back on cobra la from some here, but I remember when it first aired on tv. It was not a bad idea, just sunbow put their best work in it to go out with a bang. If they would have just renew their contract, gi joe would have had better stories and more fans today.

Although Dixon suggested there might be a secret society behind Cobra, can we assume it was Hasbro who decided they would be mutant-like characters and then came up with the designs of Golobulus and Nemesis Enforcer inparticular to cement that concept?
I think Cobra-La was handled brilliantly in the movie. I think the name works too. I like the literary inspiration behind it. If it wasn't a good concept, Guillermo Del Toro wouldn't have ripped it off for Hellboy II, a movie where a conflict between humanity and a more ancient breed of intelligent creatures also produced some cool villains. I think CC could've become an even more interesting character as someone who was rejected from his own race and existed as a real alien to this world who was still trying to use and manipulate humanity in order to conquer it. |

Talking about Cobra-La with some other fans in another forum I thought it would've been better had it been better had Cobra-La was not behind the organization. But had pushed Dr. Mindbender in to creating Serpentor so to seize control of Cobra from the Commander to use the organization for their own ends. A bit of the best of both worlds.

I've always thought, if Hasbro would make another G.I.Joe cartoon, they could do it in the Sunbow style and continue where Sunbow left off. |
