I liked that Flint and Zartan got some attention, and that Cobra Commander and Snake Eyes were bad-asses. Didn't really enjoy much else. Mishandled a bit, IMO.

I feel like an easily pleased simpleton. Everyone's pulling gripes outta their ass' and I can't bring myself to complain...about anything. I loved it...wishing only that it was longer. Not a fan of the whole ninja subplot (never have been), but even that was handled with such panache that I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Loved it...start to finish.

Well, I finally got to watch Resolute last night after being away for the weekend. Here's my take:
The good: 1. It was a very well done modernization of the GI Joe cartoon/comic mythos. 2. It captured the essence of GI Joe (bringing it back from strange diversions that have existed post 1988). This should make all the "original mythos only" fans very happy. 3. The action was strong and bullets vs. lasers was welcome and did not disappoint (even if the bullets missed pretty much as often as the lasers did). 4. It was a fun ride (if a little short), and much better than the original animated Joe movie. 5. Snake Eyes was finally unleashed in the cartoon, and mostly well done (sans birdman and superninja). 6. No Cobra La or any other gimmicky subgroups. 7. The characters were very recognizable and I felt like it didn't miss a beat from the original in that way. 8. As much as some disliked it, I was cool with the Duke/Scarlett chemistry. They both seem like a little deeper characters than the originals were. 9. Cobra Commander - more plausible than the original, but still destined to fail. The notso good (IMO): 1. As much as it was true to the original cartoons, the fantastic superweapon storyline is tired. I would have preferred an attempted kidnapping of world leaders or something like that over the regurgitated doomsday machine. Been there, done that, many times. 2. The Flagg - sure it was awesome, for the 3 minutes of the program it wasn't being blown up or vaporized. Totally underused. Strange how SS was somehow able to find it and get onboard in open sea in a "classified location." 3. The (mentioned in many posts above) Ninja story. Cool, but way over the top. It could have told the story w/o the whole 7th strike (whatever) stuff. And people complain about realism with (the yet unreleased) ROC... Plus it took up a ton of time in the show. 4. Super Snake Eyes - "Oh, we've just landed our cargo plane on main street Springfield and are pinned down by a hundred Cobra troopers and a bunch of tanks. What will we ever do? Oh, never mind, Snake Eyes just showed up and blew them all up by himself in less than 3 seconds... On with the mission." How about some air support or something just a little more realistic? Yes, I do realize it's a cartoon, but c'mon. 5. Yeah, Cobra still can't shoot. Well, okay, one of them can apparently, but he's all blowed up now... oh, and magic neverending ammo magazines... 6. The already mentioned underuse of Destro/Baroness. Yeah, they should have just tied up the hostages and gotten a room. C'mon, Destro is higher up the foodchain and smarter than that, and Baroness could use a cold shower apparently. 7. Springfield - okay, the center of the Cobra world (since Cobra Island apparently failed to get their government bailout and went belly up) - so why is Cobra only able to lauch a few weird ufo "swarm air defenders" and 3 Hiss Tanks (which were cool but blown up by Super SE) to defend it? How about some Cobra firepower? Did MARS go belly up too? 8. Other character misuses (particularly by Cobra) - Why not have Firefly be the one to sabotage the Flagg and Scrap Iron fire the rocket to deliver the message to the UN (with a big bang at the end of course)? I guess they had to set up the overblown ninja battle, but, really? Kind of a waste. 9. Bludd - dead, Storm Shadow - dead, Zartan - probably dead. Those guys would be tough to replace with any kind of continuity. Now what? 10. Yeah, as mentioned and explained, the missing blood definitely took away from the ninja battle too. More blood, less whacky over the top super moves... Overall, it was very good, but anyone thinking this will rescue us from the "inevitably fail" ROC movie that is coming in the summer must be sorely disappointed. It was a wonderful moderized continuation of the cartoon pretty much all of us enjoyed as kids, but really nothing groundbreaking beyond that. And it wouldn't take much to bring it down to "kid friendly" level for a daily/weekly run, except perhaps resurrecting some of the characters they killed off... Great 'cartoon'. I do not expect realism from animation. What I did expect was to get that GIJOE 'feeling' and thats what I got.
Thumbs up! |

Likes: The serious over-all tone. the action. you name it. I pretty much thought it was near perfect.
Dislikes: Not enough DUKE action and Flint's still alive. just kidding....I was really hoping for more Flint...(after which he dies a painful horrible death I wouldn't wish on the worst of Cobras) Ok I'm just kidding again (really) I also was hoping Hawk showed up. |

i didn't like Duke back in '82, or pretty much anywhere inbetween...especially the original cartoon. i liked him better in DDP's version. my problem with the Duke character is that NO ONE is that goody goody. it's more unrealistic than the bad ass mute ninja commando. MY problem with Duke / Scarlett / Snake Eyes is that IF you decided to kill off storm shadow...NOW you're stuck with this bad ass mute ninja commando. Duke doesn't need a foil.

did they run out of time?
you had all this build up, then they blew up springfield. WOW it's like they ran out of money and had to finish it in a hurry.

I'm glad some people pointed out that the thread is for likes and dislikes, not bashing others likes and dislikes. Mostly because I figured I was going to get jumped on by those who seem completely overwhelmed by Resolute for my next statement.
I pretty much have grown to dislike the whole thing. I blame myself for that because I psyched myself up for this movie and convinced myself it would be like the comics in animated form. Instead it's sunbow with bullets. I'm keeping the likes and dislikes short, and trying to use ones that others mostly haven't. Likes: The animators did a damn fine job. It flows perfectly and the designs and backdrops look great. Dislikes: Some of the "nods" Bear with me on this one. If this is a stand alone story as several people have already reminded us, I can think of three off the top of my head that are totally not needed and just make Ellis come off kind of snooty. 1. CC (best character in this show regardless) with the "I pretended to be weak and cowardly" Others have mentioned that this made little sense to say in front of ones own troops. 2. Scarlett renouncing Snake Eyes. I'm a big S/SE fan I admit, but even if I wasn't this was pointless. If you want to relegate her to being Dukes arm candy like in the cartoon I'm fine with that, Just don't have her have ANY involvement with snakes like in that show. Don't make a love triangle just so she can be used to end all ties between the characters. 3. Storm Shadows rant about how "all those times I told you I blamed you for my uncles death." Yet another attempt to kill off cannon for no reason. How dumb would SE have to be in this cartoon to have ever been "hurt" by that line. He was right there when SS had his uncle killed. SS ADMITTED it right there to his face. If SE could talk he would have said "Uh yeah. I never believed the blame game talk. I was there remember? I got shot in the face!" The whole thing comes off as "Forget all the other stuff! This is how things REALLY are!!!" And that doesn't fit into what's supposedly a completely independant storyline. Just my 2 cents. Take um for what they're worth. i'm very much in agreement with you on most of these. especially the SE/Scarlett/Duke thing and the SS / SE. my MAJOR dislike would echo yours that they stuck close enough to canon that it appears to agree with it and then it turns around and kills off MAJOR sections of the same canon. BUT, as for it being a stand alone story, and for simple entertainment purposes...i liked the tone, etc. it was good over all.

My only real complaints are pretty much the same as everyone elses:
The shootout with Duke and Scarlett between the Ally Vipers (you'd think after all these years Cobra would learn to recruit soldiers who can hit a target) Dial-Tone's apperent sex change operation. Also I feel they completely b*tched out Storm Shadow. I mean while I'm not dissapointed that he died (and SS if my 3rd Favorite Joe/Cobra), I just feel he died a little too easily if you will. Just the same as much as I loved Snake Eyes in this, I feel they made him a little too powerfull. I mean taking out 5 Cobra Troopers is one thing but taking out an entire army of them was a tad over the top (but still cool). Also as most I felt the ending was a little rushed. I hope that if they release Resolute on DVD, they'll add some extra content like an extended ending and such. |
