Ellis is the kind of guy that finds it funny when the fans get upset.

It IS a continuation, if not of a specific continuity then it's a continuation of the history of the franchise. It's chock full of allusions to the past.

The history of the franchise is muddled. Which version? Cartoon or comic? Resolute alludes to past events, not necessarily specific things from other continuities. We just interpret it that way because we know different continuities. CC references him being weak and whiny, we get the mental image of the Sunbow CC in our heads because we watched it, new people to the show will get the image that CC was tired of being walked on and having his plans ruined so he adopted a harder edge. Duke says that Cobra has underestimated Joe before. We know that from the times we've seen Joe wipe Cobra out in the cartoons and comics. New people will get the image that Cobra suffered a major setback at the hands of Joe sometime in the past, the decommissioned Cobra Island hints that Cobra was powerful enough to have their own island and Joe defeated 'em. So it's letting us make the jumps to connect present and past, but leaving it completely open to doing a Resolute Prequel which could be something we have no concept of.

It's not a direct continuation of any existing storyline, so that means things can be changed how they want (SE's losing his throat, SS being a mean bastard and now a cooler character).

It leaves us to fill the blanks for most of the Joe history ourselves. That is, until they create more episodes/movies with more continuity-displacing flashbacks...
