When the 1986 season of GI Joe came out, Hawk just appeared out of nowhere. I know he was in the comics and came with the MMS but he was not used at all between 1983-1985. In the comic I remember Hawk being shot in the back by Cobra Commander in one issue.

He was featured more in the comics than the tv show, in the comics he was always the field commander (Duke's role in the show) as a colonel. I personally think the producers of the show just figured Duke was cooler commander then when they realized the show would last was when they would 'introduce' Hawk. Obviously I always preferred Hawk.

Hawk was in the comics throughout the series. He was put in a desk for a short period, but was still around. Hawk was shot in the DDP run as well as Marvel. In Marvel, it was kind of minor - he was wearing a bulletproof vest. In DDP, that was not the case and became a parapalygic. But even in that run he remained a presence on he team.
He was prompted to general when the new Pitt was dedicated.

(Duke was also an early mail order, so giving him so much focus was likely a marketing decision to help the mail order initiative, which also helped fuel regular retail sales) Remember, the idea of "cohesive story telling" was secondary to "shilling the newest toy", so the ONLY reason Hawk appeared in the show at all was because he got a new figure. Regardless of the writers' and producers' intentions, ultimately, the characters and direction of the series was dictated by what Hasbro was doing with the toyline.

Actually, Duke got the field position in the cartoon because he was the newest "leader toy" Hasbro produced, with the MMS itself slated for discontinuation the next year (and Duke was still slated for availability for at least one or two more years at the time).

When the average household only has a dozen or so channels, all of which focused "kid centric" programming at the same times (after school and saturday mornings), it was a lot easier to market product. Unlike today where "sub basic cable" cartoon blocks are dead, and even basic cable has 3 or 4 channels aimed at kids, with thematically similar content spread all over the week. And once you hit expanded cable? Easily half a dozen channels all vying for kids' attention, not even counting the proliferation of the internet and such.

If I remember correctly in the comic the Joes took orders from General Flagg, but there was no figure of him until later into the 90's.
I always wondered that with how basic and ordinary the original Joes looked in olive drab what made Larry Hama pick out Hawk who according to his file card was the MMS Commander stand out and assigned Joe commander? |

The first General Flagg figure we got was supposed to be his son Lawrence Flagg III...eventually we did get a General Flagg II in the comic packs right before everything went DTC. Maybe around VvsV time? |
