....and I realize, they were HORRIBLE.
I cringe everytime I hear them say "Yo Joe". Horrible plots, horrible animation (watching Arise Serpentor Arise and can see the artwork change in mid-scene from Strato-Viper to Viper). Just horrible stuff. I can't watch anymore of 'em. I wanted to watch all the episodes, but now it's changing how I view my childhood. I actually liked these as a kid? I thought they were cool? Thank god I was always more of a fan of the comic then the cartoons. The cartoons are just bad. I'm probably going to get lynched for this, but oh well... I just won't ever watch the old cartoons again. Hopefully Resolute can save the Joe cartoon. So, with anything (not just Joe), when you look back on it now, does it still old up? Sadly, the only stuff I've looked back on now, and didn't find the same enjoyment as I did as a kid, was the Joe cartoon. Some of the stuff, see it now and go "yeah, that was a corny" but can still enjoy it. Battle of the Planets was my favorite cartoon, saw some of 'em not that long ago and thought it was kind of corny, but still held some charm for me. Not so the Joe cartoon. Bring on Resolute!!

I hear you. The cartoon is awful. The writing, acting, plots, action, characterization... It's all just so FAIL. You'd think they'd at least check out the characters' filecards, or at least TRY to get the Joeverse correct. But no, instead they ignore the comic, and produce crap.
At least the Transformers '80s cartoon isn't as bad as the Joe one.

The cartoon is, I agree, 100% fail. Awful in every respect. Terrible writing, terrible plots, terrible voice acting, sub-par animation and some of the most annoying music of all time. I'll take the comics, thanks.
Note this didn't stop me from buying the DVD packs...and I knew from youtube and the like that the cartoons would be awful...but I did that for the figures. And the MASS device looks cool as a toy, even if the show about it was shit.

I made it thru part of one of the joe DVDs that came with the weather dominator pack... couldn't bring myself to finish it. It really was awful... The cartoon is one of those things I can "remember" loving... but can't go back and watch. Those complaints about 30min toy commercials I always argued against were actually right on the mark.

I used to think that way. I mean, sure I was getting figures I'd generally already have and/or didn't want, but hey, there's a bonus DVD, yay!
Then I watched it. Needless to say, I'm threw with DVD packs.

I agree that it's lost its luster, of course it has. Try watching the Smurfs, Captain N, any show you watched religiously when you were young, they just don't hold up, and REALLY date themselves more often than not with pop culture references. But say what you will, you can't possibly deny that Chris Latta's laugh was legendary. Best villain laugh EVER.

I actually think that some of them are well-written. Some are horrible, particularly Pyramid of Darkness--I have a hard time watching that one. But I think ones such as Countdown for Zartan, Sythoid Conspiracy, Jungle Trap, and many others are good, especially for a kid's show.

You got to remember, they were just long commercials, and as such, especially added with the popularity, they were just spitting out script after script.
That being said, I still like to watch the show, as I remember fondly coming home from school and watching it. I do hate the theme song though, it's horrible. It's like they wrote it in the mid 70's or something. I gave up on the series after they introduced Serpentor, and finally that crappy movie. I never saw Cobra Commander as someone who would just give the leadership of Cobra over to some genetically enhanced clone whatever the hell he was. Then again, I never saw him as being part of an ancient race...lol. Cobra La and Serpentor was the end of tv show for me. |

Some people are adamant that the cartoon is the definitive GI Joe, I'll never understand it. There's no sense in arguing cause no one will ever convince me that comic isn't. To each their own I guess.
I'm waiting for my dvd sets to show up in the mail and the thought has crossed my mind, what if I hate it? I think I'll be ok though since I see the cartoon as a bonus, not cannon. As far as old cartoons holding up I haven't seen any in a while, I'd like to check out He-Man and Voltron though. Every once in a while I'll catch an episode Thundarr the Barbarian on cartoon network and I still like it just fine, but I've always been a sucker for post apocalyptic future stories. |
