So, personally, I'm not that interested in the "cartoon accurate" repaints. For me, the figures themselves from '82-'87 define GI Joe, and for the longest time that was all I knew about the characters. I didn't read the comic book, and when the cartoon originally aired, we lived in a rural area and so I didn't get to see it. Cable didn't go out that far and satellite TV was still prettyy rare in our part of the country. Anything I watched on TV came in through a big antenna on top of the house. We had four channels. I remember that one of the channels did carry GI Joe, but it was scheduled for weekday mornings and always came on just as I was catching the school bus.
Bottom line, I never saw more than an episode or two of the series until the recent DVD packs.. So I'm wondering -- how many other people on here are just not that familiar with the GI Joe cartoon? It's not that I have anything against it, I just didn't watch it so it doesn't hold any significance for me. Even the characters that I like that might have originated on the series, I didn't know that's where they came from at the time. Anybody? Last edited by aaronsaylor; 11-06-2008 at 12:00 AM.. |

But I will say, the episodes I've seen are pretty good (save for the occasional breakdancing Snake Eyes horror). I'm sure I would have been into it as a ten year old.

I did the trifecta: cartoon, figures and comic book.

It was before my time, but from my older brother, cousin and video store I watched the original cartoon (and Transformers), of course I read the comics as well... didn't have many toys in the early 90s but some.

I watched them all the time as a kid. I would tape them and then watch them on vhs over and over again.

I'm right there with you. We had it all at my house. My Brother and I watched the show every morning. Mom said we were Methodists, but it seemed more like we were members of the Church of Duke and Flint to me. We read the comics. We even had the trading cards... and I've got the complete set somewhere.
The cartoon was great. I have all the official DVD sets that they released - WHERE IS SEASON 2 VOLUME 2 ??? - I still get them out a watch them. They are just fantastic. So funny. Cobra Commander makes me laugh so hard every time he comes on the screen. However, the cartoon was always considered to be mere entertainment. The Comic and File cards were the LAW and considered sacred cannon. The cartoon was just fun. The comic was serious business. We knew the difference between Lasers and bullets.
