I grew up watching GI Joe. That was my favorite cartoon and toy. I didn't get into the comics. I might try to get into them now to see what I missed. I have ALL the episodes now. They are amusing to watch with my 5yr old son.

I guess if you didn't watch it as a kid; you'll never love it as much as the people who did. But what can you do. You can't make your brain that innocent again. I truly feel sorry for anyone who can't "suspend their disbelief" enough to really enjoy the GI JOE cartoon.

Oh, I don't have any trouble with a suspension of disbelief. I'm geek to the bone and always will be, no matter how old I am.
My point about the cartoon is that since I couldn't watch it when I was younger, my whole GI Joe world revolved around the toys, so when I finally did see the cartoon it didn't quite hold my imagination the way the action figures did/do.

I argue (and still stand behind it) that more people have seen the Joe cartoon and consider that "canon" and don't even know there was a Joe comic book, same as more people will have seen the new Joe movie than probably knew there was a comic book (and perhaps, ever watched the show much as a kid).
The cartoon, while goofy, was the driving force behind my Joe-buying as a kid. Congratulations, Hasbro. Cartoon Marketing won. Now, I'll stand behind anyone who says that the comic books were probably better... I haven't read them, but hope to pick up the re-released TPB versions whenever they come out... In my daily Joe-play as a kid, Cobra Commander wasn't a runaway wuss like the show made him out to be, he was much more ruthless and dangerous. So perhaps I should have read the comics as a kid, but you know what? The cartoon was free, and very much enjoyable. And I still love seeing something in action versus just having to imagine it (and I'm very good at imagining things). Although I love the old cartoon to this day. Sure, it was cheesy, but I still think the dialogue and stories—often formulaic and repetitive—were better than most cartoons of its day, and probably better than most crap out there for kids today. It's dated now, so not all of it would make as much sense, but from what I've seen of some kids shows today, the stories are very empty. |

As a child, I didn't have many Joe Toys and I thought the comic was boring (It was too wordy for me, it also didn't help that by the time I started reading it, it was 1986 or so)
So with that, the cartoon was all I really knew about GI Joe. I of course, love the cartoon and I actually like Snake-Eyes break dancing or dressing up like Boy George. All that said, I recently started reading the comics a couple of years ago and realised with the very first issue, that I was missing a lot when the Baroness threatened to change a hostage's head into a fine red mist. |

I have most of the 25th cartoon accurate figures but they are given to my nieces who love watching GI Joe. I don't prefer them either but I like the all of the updated 25th anniversary figures.

I was much more familiar with the cartoon as a child, watched it religiously.
On the other hand, I didn't read the run of the Marvel comics 'til just a couple of years ago. That was very enjoyable. I'd read some of them, but never the whole thing all the way through, well, except for the last four issues or so. |
