The Original Cartoons had alot of Adult themed in-jokes and situations that totally flew over my head as a kid. It's only now Re-watching them that I'm catching it, and man did those animators get away with alotta stuff that would never make it past todays censors...

For me it was always figures with my imagination, comics and then every once and a while the cartoon. I took the first two as the truth and the last one as a bit of a joke!!

Probably my first orgasm was in September 1983 when I turned on the TV expecting to see another lame episode of Scooby-Doo...and, instead, I heard a little jingle and the words: "GI Joe will be right back!". Since this was in the days before the Internets, I had no idea such a thing was even in development. I was so thrilled that it was suddenly on!
I loved that first five-parter ("The MASS Device"). It was only on maybe three or four times a year (September, December and March) so to see it was like catching Haley's Comet. Furthermore, my local channel ran it at 3:30-4:00pm...and school didn't let out until 3:35! So we had to sprint out of the door, grab our bikes and FLY home. If we were lucky, we got home at 3:45 and got 15 minutes of bliss. It was the same way when the cartoon returned in 1984 ("Revenge of Cobra"). That was a huge tease, because it had the early debuts of Flint, Lady Jaye and Shipwreck. But when the daily cartoon finally arrived in the fall of 1985...I was severely disappointed. The Joes were like the Super-Friends and Cobra did goofy stuff like shake-down the owner of a fast food joint.

There should be an option of "it's the worst cartoon I have ever watched but for some reason I still kinda like it".

From The Mass Device 5 parter on. That mini-series meant the world to me. And has stuck in my mind forever. Especially Snake Eyes leaving the cave covered in radiation. And the tube worms...
I never missed an episode. I loved it and still love it. |

The show always towed theline between goofiness and greatness, butit had it's moments, even at it's most cheaply animated. The aformentioned scene where SE staggers out of the cave was a classic. The cobra troopers falling back just for feear of the radiation he's giving off. Even Maj Blud was a little disturbed by the sight, and held off on his men firing on him (whether out of pity, or if he was too scared to dispose of the body is anyone's guess).
"Let 'im go! He's dead already." I also liked it for having at least one serious villain in Destro. He was intelligent, methodical, and he rarely lost his temper, but when he did it was clear you would not want to face this guy in a fight unarmed. |

It's all good. You didn't miss much. The original Joe series, much like the original Transformers show, or a lot of other 80's shows, is just painful to watch. Absolutely terrible. I watched all the episodes as a kid, and I have fond memories of them, but I can't watch them now. Sorry, but it's how I see it.

The best line was in GI JOE the Movie, when Falcon slapped Jinx on the butt and she turns around and says "Falcon." In which he responds "do you want me to kiss it and make it better." LOVE THAT. I was just watching the classic toon today and noticed that they had AVACs piloting Rattlers before the toys was ever introduced. I can't remember the episode name, but it was the one where Steeler gets wacked out from a bug bite. They were in another dimension where Cobra ruled the world and the Dreadnoks were Cops...Awesome!
