I wish the sunbow cartoon had continued past the movie...
I've been watching the season 2 episodes on the Hub and I gotta say there is a BIG difference between season 1 and 2 episodes. It seems like the writers really got some room to breath and write up some really great stories! Take for example the one I'm watching now, A carrier is being decommissioned and prepped for the chop shop, so the admiral decided to join Cobra in order to save his beloved ship. the ending is kind of a downer cuz you know he's gonna get his ass court marshaled for his passion. During the episode, Hawk totally didnt want to call in the attack either. I think if the show had continued with the regular Sunbow writers, it could have gone on to give us equally awesome episodes. We could have gotten more Serpentor, and maybe witness his death so the Commander could come back. the possibilities were endless.

I tend to think that had Sunbow continued after the Movie that we wouldn't have gotten more Serpentor as in the Movie he seemingly fell to his death. It was Golobulus that survived. Not sure why DIC had him alive and well. I figure they would of went straight to "resurrecting" Cobra Commander.

From what I understand, the proposed third season of the show would have featured the Joes battling the Crimson Twins running the evil organization Coil, which would have been more of a criminal enterprise than a military one. And Cobra Commander would have been restored to some sort of humanoid form (probably in the battle armor) and playing both sides against each other.
I want to say I saw this in an interview with Buzz Dixon (maybe?) on Yojoe.com EDIT: Ah, here it is. http://www.joeheadquarters.com/commentaries/eps3.html

Reading about what could have been is cool, but really a downer. I understand hasbro was trying to save money after funding the joe cartoon. But, they could have cut corners by ordering less episodes from sunbow. I mean look where marvel is now with movie production. It's a shame hasbro can't go back to that time and release a season 3 sunbow like continuation of the series and start releasing all of the joe figures and vehicles again to support it. Here's hoping the next joe movie is a big success. |

GI Joe Season Three (1987-1988) It was not the nature of most of those syndicated shows (especially from Marvel) to have those huge interconnected seasons, and I see nothing to indicate things would have changed for Joe. Fans always create a "mystique" around unproduced concepts which invariably end up being much more elaborate and "better" than the material we would have gotten.

Sunbow Season 3 would've been nice, there was plenty to do with the cast they had... but knowing how the quality dipped in Transformers Season 3 (which followed the movie), there's definitely a hype and "legend" surrounding this concept that most likely would not have played out long term.
Much like DIC, Sunbow would've started up with a 5-parter, reintroduced all the characters necessary to rebuild Cobra and we would've been off to the races. Lots of Falcon, Slaughter, and Jinx... not so much Duke or Scarlett, heavy use of Gung-Ho in his dress blues (no matter the battlefield) and a Cobra cast consisting largely of Crystal Ball, Raptor, Big Boa, and Croc Master. Feels like it would've been as hit-and-miss as any other season. Now Season 4, with the 1988 characters... that might have been golden. |

I wonder if DIC's way of returning Cobra Commander to human-like form in Dragonfire was an early draft as to what they'd have done in Sunbow season 3. I just find Dragonfire to be such barbones creatively, I tend to hope Sunbow had something better up their sleaves.
The 87 crop of Cobras weren't great. True. I can't imagine what they could do with Raptor. Croc Master would have got the same kind of treatment Copperhead did; he'd just be a glorified guard for them to bead up before breaking into a base. I say Pythona sticks around in a Cyclonus type role. Golobulus gets one or two episode blowoff as Unicron did, never getting to return to a power player position. Flint and Lady Jaye would have gotten episodes focused on them. The Sunbow team loved those characters and managed to feature them serveral times during season two. I saw some of the TV ads for the comics on Youtube and man the animation was top notch in those ads.I would have killed to see the Techno vipers, the X-19 srealth fighter, the Rolling thunder in thier cartoon glory.Such wasted potential. Also, showing Destro's Iron Grenadiers the way they should have been.
