Is the opening supposed to be in the continuity of the film?
Meaning...what Serpentor is ranting and raving about is the recent COBRA failure to destroy the Statue of Liberty? Or is the opening just a stand-alone sequence that isn't technically part of the story? I never thought of the openings for any of the Joe seasons as existing in the timeline before. What do you think?

stand alone sequence
writer of the movie had nothing to do with the opening sequence (in fact, he always disliked it) As for me, I can watch that opening sequence over and over again and still get goosebumps...it's that awesome! |

He was just in a pissed mood. Remember he has DNA of all these bad-asses and he wonders why him and his army look back. Of course in my opinion it was Cobra Commander's army originally before the Coup d' Etat with Serpentor leading the charge.

I've always viewed it as a stand alone sequence that shows off the Joes prowess in always defeating Cobra "over land, and sea, and air" it was more just a way to explain the roles of the Joes and Cobra.

It is a stand alone for sure. They mention it in the Blu-ray commentary. In fact it was created during the middle of production if I remember correctly.

Well, regardless of of what everyone involved in it's creation says, i say "hell yeah!" Why not. The Joes just kicked Cobra's ass and blew up a crap load of vehicles all televised for the world to see. they were even smiling while they did it. So it's a perfect reason for Serpentor to decide it's his time to take over... maybe the Cobra la folks were watching it all on TV and that's why they made their move too. Cobra Commander decided to go all Captain Kirk and strapped on a bomb and a jetpack and dove right into the battle... then looked like an ass getting punched by Duke and flying away ON TOP of a trouble bubble. Globulus just had enough and it was time to make some changes!
