I own 11 Sideshow figures. I have the Indiana Jones and the Lord of the Rings figures. I buy most of mine from eBay for less than retail price. I love the sculpt, clothing, and accessories that comes with these figures. My main complaint is that certain items on figures maybe fragile and break easily. Sideshow replacement policy sucks. Trying to get a replacement part is like pulling teeth with tweezers, it is just damn near impossible. I will probably not be buying any new Sideshow items. because of their lack of help with broken item.

While the licensing issue is part of the reason for the expense, the other is the limited run. We're looking at runs of 1500 - 3000 where the Dragon figures are in the 10K - 30K numbers. The more you make, the cheaper it is. Even the Hot Toys figures are creeping up there in price (yeah, I know, there's the HT quality is better arguements).
I'd love to see the price points drop. Especially since I'm an army builder. I buy one of the exclusives through Sideshow, then pick up parts from the vendors, and look for cheaper ones on ebay. The Joe line is pretty much the only line these days I'm collecting solid. I few other figures here and there, but nothing major. I'm pleased with the direction they're taking and hope it'll continue. As for the beret color argument, they're fine by me. IIRC the Army did use red berets for artillery at one point. Cloth berets (and masks) are always a pain to replicate. I'm fine with the plastic ones, but it's too bad they didn't consider flocking them. John |

I don't judge them on their reality but on quality. I agree that their Quality Control is lacking and have posted so many time. Their pouches are lower quality than any of the other manufacturers mentioned above. Some of their accessories are just sub par in my opinion. That being said, I do collect them and buy parts here and there for customs.
Each figure released to date has hade good and bad points. Everybody has a different impression of them. They look good displayed together and I look forward to BH and Flint. I think they will take the line in a possitive direction.

I've only heard great things about their customer service and willingness to replace items. Even boxes that arrive damaged. That's amazing, if you ask me. I have the Crimson CC and the Snake Eyes and I'm awestruck by their awesomeness.

Yeah, I gotta disagree as well. I LOVE the Sideshow Joe line. I don't agree with all their choices/changes but overall I think they're doing great. I've bought every one so far and haven't been disappointed - when I've wondered whether I'd like a figure because of some of the more drastic changes (e.g. Cobra Commander, Cobra Sniper, etc), I've been much more impressed with the final product than I expected.
As for the price, yeah, I'd be happier if they were a bit less expensive, but still, while I'm not really familiar with the other companies you mentioned, I am VERY familiar with Hot Toys and they're charging quite a bit more than Sideshow for their 12" figures. Are they better, in terms of detail and sculpting? Sure they are, but you're paying a premium for that. Likewise, we're paying a premium for Sideshow figures but they're far better than a figure you'd get for $60 or so.

I think that what people are forgetting is that these things cost money to make. Production can't be cheap, no matter where the labour is happening. The worldwide market on cost for everything is rising, and I think $130 is a fair price. Now if they went trying to charge $175 or higher for something that is not on the level of Hot Toys, then I'd have a problem with that. Sorry but as cool as Storm Shadow or Duke are, they don't hold a candle to my DX Joker or DX Batman (w/ the parallel rolling eyes).
The market will ultimately speak though. If people stop buying, then they'll stop making them. Seems pretty simple to me. |
