IDW had a press event where they talked about the upcoming direction of G.I. Joe and the Cobra Civil War.
G.I. Joe Enters the "Cobra Civil War" - Comic Book Resources They mention that Cobra Commander is more of a title and that there's a Cobra Council that oversees the entire organization. Three books: G.I. Joe by Dixon and Javier Saltares Snake Eyes by Dixon and Robert Atkins Cobra by Costa and Fuso

I actually like it. They're making Cobra a larger and more organized group with a long history.
Best origin for the group yet. Sure beats "used car salesman" creates terrorist army.

With some intelligent writing, this could be an instant classic. Hoping for the same reality stuff as in the Cobra ongoing. Big bad boys kicking each other for the throne? I'm in. (need more stories about Krake and Mad Monk though)

Here are two articles that go over it in more detail:
G.I. Joe Comics End With A Bang, Relaunch With A Civil War! [SPOILER ALERT] G.I. Joe Enters the "Cobra Civil War" - Comic Book Resources This Cobra Commander never really had much character development, so I'm not surprised they killed him. The Mad Monk had more character development than him. My prediction for the new CC is that it won't be a famous named character like Destro or Major Bludd. By turning one of them into CC, we would be losing another great Cobra character. I think it will be Krake. Reread the latest GI Joe Origins story arc. At first I misinterpreted the No. 8 as CC. When you read the story arc from that point of view, it really seems like CC is a good fit. And who better to run the Cobra organization than a No. 8 and someone that can change the world? Plus, Krake seems more than capable of killing the most Joes. I think other possible candidates might be the Mad Monk or Blacklight. He was the guy in the wolf mask in GI Joe 14. I wondering how this will affect Zartan. The dead CC was the only guy that knew Zartan's identity. |

Hopefully the combined effort of the three comics will be more akin to the COBRA series than the lackluster Dixon run. Tone and pace.

The cool thing is that the Cobra Civil War books are a great way for new readers, or older readers who haven't read any of the books in a while, like yourself, to latch onto/start with. Costa has done great work. I think the Civil War plot is a good starting point, but definitely check out GI Joe Cobra #12, it's an excellent issue.
