Growing up, I didn't have or read many comics. I loved & enjoyed superheroes like every kid, primarily through the 90s cartoons & toys.
I'm contemplating getting a subscription to Marvel Digital Comics & was just hoping for some feedback. Up 'til now, the only comics I've followed ardently has been GI Joe. As I'm sure you know, it's a relatively small/simple universe. When it comes to Marvel, I just have the sense that there is so much out there that I don't even know how to begin. The Marvel Universe is so big & interconnected that it's intimidating for someone like me coming into it the first time. For instance, I get confused by the plethora of X-Men related titles. How do they all relate, if at all? Does Marvel have online guides for newbies like me on how to start? If I just start reading X-Men at the beginning, I have a feeling I'm gonna miss out on their appearances in other titles. And that's the impression I have about Marvel: You either have to read EVERY comic just to know what's going on & to have the big picture. Part of me thinks that plunge is too big & I should just stick to having Marvel Animation as my gateway. (I'm a huge fan of Wolverine & The X-Men, Spectacular Spider-Man, F4: World's Greatest Heroes, etc). Thanks for any feedback. |

Marvel has it's own wiki thing but it's HORRIBLE. Its fan updated (rarely) and has alot of errors in it.
On the Digital Subscription... meh... It's not up to date (recent work) and it's hit or miss. There's no straight series from issue #1 to latest issue. Uncanny X-Men is all over the map. It's very random. It's weird. One of the things I'm working on is an archive to help bring people up to date, one of these days I'll get it up and running. Any questions, I can probably answer. I'm pretty up to date on most books, even ones I don't read.

Hmmm, I'm most interested in Daredevil & X-Men for starters. The former will be a lot less work. But there's so many X-Men titles that it gets confusing.

Daredevil.. figures the one I really know the least about, lol
Daredevil's status quo is in the midst of a big change with the current Shadowland cross over/event. He's working with the Hand and has taken over Hell's Kitchen and is ruling it with an iron hand. Bullseye blew up a city block, killing alot of people, and that kind of made Matt think that enough wasn't being done. It was just revealed in Shadowland #3 (last week) that he's being influenced by the demon that is the ultimate ruler of the Hand. Daredevil's title will end with #512 end of this year and there will be a Daredevil Reborn title that launches the new status quo. Marvel is hinting that there will be a new "man without fear". My guess is that Matt Murdock goes on a soul cleansing/searching sabbatical and someone knew takes over as Daredevil for awhile. X-Men... M-Day was the Scarlet Witch changing the world to match Magneto's vision. At the end she screamed "no more mutants" and mutants the world over lost their powers so that there's only around 198 mutants in the world. So they started banding together for protection. Cyclops has stepped out of Prof X's shadow and is changing into the leader he was always meant to be. The Messiah Complex saw the birth of Hope, the first mutant birth since M-Day. Cyclops had her sent into the future with Cable for protection from all the forces out to get her. Bishop became "bad" because he saw Hope as the force that created his dystopian future. Utopia saw the X-Men get involved in the Dark Reign "event" (all the non-mutant specific things can be found here). This was Cyclops stepping up and creating an island home (from Magneto's Asteroid M) for the mutants to live on. Around this time, before Dark Reign, Cyclops and Wolverine created a new X-Force. Basically Cyclops Black Ops team that would go and take out (kill) the threats to the diminished mutant race. No one else knew about X-Force or the actions they took, that was revealed in Second Coming and no one was happy. Recently Second Coming finished up. This saw the return of Hope and the all out war between the mutants and Bastions sentinals. The mutants won and the whole world saw them defending San Francisco, which had accepted the mutants and gave them a place to live. So the mutants got a bit of an image boost. Hope returned and with her return there were 5 new mutants that registered on Cerebra. Except these mutants don't come into their abilities like the others of old did. They get their powers, but it takes Hope "activating" them to get them some semblance of control. Generation Hope starts up soon, with these new mutants and Hope. Uncanny X-Force sees Wolverine start up the black ops squad, which Cyclops disbanded thinking it wasn't needed anymore, and this time Wolverine doesn't have Cyclops permission or backing. Thats it in a nutshell. Second Coming saw the death of Nightcrawler and Cable. Magneto kneeled at Cyclops feet and proclaimed Scott the mutant leader. To prove his good intentions, Magneto brought Kitty back from the giant bullet she was trapped in. The new adjectiveless X-Men title has them in a mini-event, fighting off vampires.

Out of date, lol
Green Goblin (Norman Osborn) - Marvel Universe Wiki: The definitive online source for Marvel super hero bios. Nothing after Secret Invasion and that was 2-3 years ago. It doesn't even go up to Secret Invasion, just to where he gets control of the Thunderbolts which was a year or two prior to Secret Invasion.

Wow, thanks Troynos.
But when I mentioned if Marvel had an online guides for newbies, what I had in mind was more of a customized reading plan. Like if I want to read ALL the X-Men related titles from the beginning in order of release, I wish they had a list (in print or digital) where I could check each issue off after I read it. |

Go to your local comic shop. Occasionally, Marvel will put out books called ______________ Saga, where they list the high points of a particular character. They'll also have checklists for trades and a reading order.
Last week, I got a Wolverine Saga that detailed all the Wolvie/Daken stuff from the past few years. I know they've done a New Mutants Saga, Secret Wars Saga, Daredevil Saga, etc. I'm sure there's probably an X-men saga out there. All that said, Marvel's digital comic system was good for reading solid runs of popular books. It's not super-up-to date, but there's plenty there for it to be worthwhile. |
