Another unfinished issue from Brooks. Each of the vignettes don't tell a complete story, they only show part of the facet of the characters without showing the fullness.
Is Mindbender really so old that he was there with Oppenheimer testing the first A-Bomb? I wouldn't call Doc and Dr. Minbender in the same profession. One's a medical doctor and the other is a scientist (doubt he's a dentist in IDW continuity). Docs story was a bit odd. It was set up so it seemed like the kid was going to be Doc, and that would be a great way to explain why he became a medical doctor. Which wasn't explained. We really didn't get into the heart or mind of Doc, as we didn't learn why he's a doctor. No motivation, nothing. We just saw him acting out scenes that corresponded to the bits of the Hippcratic oath he was reciting.

so the kid wasn't Doc?
i sometimes overlook stuff, but i thought the art on the doctor at the end was different from Doc throughout the story, he looked older than Doc was in the story. so i figured the kid was Doc, and his motivation to become a great doctor was the death of his newborn sister. if i'm wrong, and the doctor was indeed Doc, i don't care much for the story all... his motivation is based on guilt, not wanting to make right what the doctor did wrong. |

I'm pretty sure the guy at the end was Doc.
The way the story was set up it made it seem like the kid would grow up to be Doc and that was great motivation. A doctor failed to save his sister (I thought it was mom) and he becomes one so he can prevent that from ever happening to another family again. And that would be great. But then the kid isn't Doc and the whole thing just falls apart. Just looked again, and the guy at the end is definately Doc.

Ya know, I gotta agree with you on this, Troy. I found the Mindbender part of the issue more cohesive, and a better glimpse into who he is. However, that's all negated by the fact that the guy barely aged in all that time. It's freakin' bizarre.
The Doc portion of the issue seemed like it was part of a bigger story, cut out and reprinted. Like this was the middle of an issue that had a set up, and an ending. We just never saw either. Oh well, I'm hoping he doesn't butcher the Blueshirts too bad in this next issue.

it just keeps getting worse and worse. the art needs to be a little better besides the storytelling.

I thought the art was good, the only thing that stuck out was the colors for Fuso's half of the issue. Flippo Flores did the colors and as mentioned in my review, Fuso's work lends itself better to subtle color as opposed to cel/cuts.

This was not typical Chaykin work. Not up to his usual standards. It had a sloppiness I'm not used to seeing in his work.
Same with Fusos. It could have been the colorist but the linework just looked lacking compared to his normal stuff.

I'm used to Chaykin's work being like that. With Fuso the difference is noticeable but not as noticeable as the colors, those stuck out a lot for me.
