Brian Reed and Agustin Padilla bring us the next adventure of the GI Joe team in the movie continuity with GI Joe OPERATION HISS #4. The Joes have been captured by the ruthless Major Bludd with no help in sight! Can the Joes find a way to outwit him?
The 1st thing I noticed about this issue is how the artwork has maintained high clarity, but is still tarnished by random specks of ink. Now perhaps these are used to convey the randomness chaos the Joes find themselves in. Maybe they are supposed to communicate a struggle. However the specks come off as blemishes on otherwise great inkwork. It's similar to scanning in a drawing but with a dusty lens. I can understand the placement of specks and spatters when someone is shot, or where there is an explosion, but anytime else? Not so much. Padilla's work, specks/spatters aside, is very graphical with high contrast, and strategically placed spot blacks. The foreground/background separation is executed well, as well as the color holds, and textures. In this issue, Reed has put a lot of focus on Major Bludd, which is great, because who knows if he will show in GI Joe 2. The Joes are in a situation where all of the odds are against them. With Major Bludd, anything is possible and he isn't predictable at all. He isn't the head of Cobra but that doesn't undermine his ruthlessness whatsoever. Being a highly classified team doesn't mean someone like Major Bludd can't be privy to their secrets. I am glad Bludd has not been downplayed at all, and this maybe the only movie continuity series where he is in the spotlight. How the Joes will get out of this situation, or if they get out of it at all will be seen in the next issue. Their deus ex machina typically found in Snake Eyes doesn't work all the time. I like seeing the Joe team up against the odds, because you never know what the outcome will be. IDW has excelled in this; look at GI Joe Cobra. This issue leaves me wondering what will happen next and is worth picking up. |

SPOILERS
Major Bludd kills some of the cannon fodder Joes. He also takes over the hologram projector that General Hawk has, and broadcasts an open threat, using General Hawk's holo-image, then proceeds to set off explosions, like blowing up the Golden Gate bridge. He is able to do this because Duke gave one of Bludd's men security codes to the GI Joe network(s). Storm Shadow shows up and attacks Snake Eyes. Snake Eyes tries to save his teammates but can't. It's hard to see how Duke will pull off betraying Major Bludd, Bludd has all the major cards in his hand |
