Better yet make sure to ask your local comic shop to hold a copy, or get it cheaper than amazon (most the time) at instocktrades.com

Yeah I usually get it cheaper online when it's in stock. Less expensive than comic shops. Haven't paid full price yet.

So I just picked up the Special Mission trade Vol. 1 this week; I have been reading the collected Classics and made it to Vol. 6.
I had forgotten (or more likely was unaware because I was a kid) how much more complex and refined the Special Missions books were. It is amazing what Hama and Trimpe could accomplish once they were unencumbered with the business of selling toys. These are tight, pure military adventures--forget the fantasy stuff (for the MOST part.) And loaded with sharp political observation. I am super impressed with these stories and the art. Hama is a bonafide talent, and I think he gets marginalized as a toy peddler by the comics hobby in general. Which is a goddamned shame. |

Yeah the Special Missions are probably the best issues in the Marvel series. Some of the more interesting stuff, including the Borovia arc, was written for SM.

It's also interesting because Hama gets to flesh out the characters (which he wrote the file cards for in the first place) in much different tones than the cartoon ever could. Like, Leatherneck is kind of a hardcore asshole. And Slipstream gets a lot of play. And firefly is ruthless.
Would make a great starting point for an HBO type series. |

The SM line included some of the best comics - absolutely. Much less of the comic Cobra elements, tasteful but not overdone ninja stuff, a believable, at times thought provoking, at times funny - right out of the late Cold War era.
I´d love to see this line, or something similar get started again. I loved the whole story arc based around the rescue mission to Borovia (which I think started in the regular comic but then continued in the Special Missions); the story arc around that reistance group in China; the mission with Outback, Dusty, Lightfoot, and Mangler; and the two separate jungle ambush single issue missions. I missed out on a few issues and I do look forward to collecting them all now with these trade paperbacks. |
