Well guys, I really didn't want to like this. Don't get me wrong I have nothing but respect for the venerable God Father of GI Joe.. but the move to replace Devil's Due's 8 years of comic history with a new continuation, even one by Larry Hama, did not sit well with me.
That said I can't fault the issue in anyway. All the characters are back and true to form, the comic starts with a really fun Dream Sequence, of Cobra Commander storming the Senate Building with a column of Hisstanks. Awakened from his dream by Zatarn he learns that a similar event has just occurred an attack lead by a Terrorist Group secretly funded by Cobra. This manufactured menace is enough to get a bill proposing Martial Law introduced and Crimson Guards in the senate will ensure it gets passed. Meanwhile after the Commander's son Billy has a refresher session in the Brainwave Scanner; we learn that the late Dr. Venom left a trojan horse in the system which is now active. The Art by Augstin Padilla is top notch; the characters look perfect (though Storm Shadow has ditched his Ninja Force fatigues sadly). I always enjoyed Hama's high culture references and those are still present. Everything about this continuation just feels right and I can't wait to see where the series leads. I still have reservations about picking this title up... I still dislike what it represents (the idea that only Hama can write GI Joe and that the Devil's Due run is in some way obsolete or inferior), but I very much want to find out what happens next. The comic also included classic-style file cards for the Brainwave Scanner and Billy, I do hope these become regular features since they're quite fun.

I loved it and I am very happy to have the original title I grew up with back. I enjoyed the image comics up until red shadows but after when they scaled back the team and the whole WWW3 storyline, great idea, crap execution. I understand there were probably constraints that hurt the title from where the writers really wanted to go with it, but my opinion stands.
As far as DDP not existing, only you can make that decision. If you want those stories to be canon, make them canon. |

It was all "sold out" at my comic shop...
:-( The only book I wanted for free comic book day... aside from War of the Supermen. |

I went to a third shop and they had a full rack of free comics but one empty spot where GI Joe should be was conspiciously empty. I think somebody went around a cleared them out to try and make ebay sales or something. |

I got a hold of it
I was surprised to see the retro CG look they went with (much more similar to the first appearance of the CGs) |

I got it too. For better or worse, it's a very "Hama" story. He's already got a hundred subplots going on (and possibly no idea where they're going, he tended to work on the fly a lot), some of them by people who've been dead for a 135 issues(!).
If what I think happens with the brainwave scanner happens, it's going to divide the fans. Some are going to fist-pump, some are going to face-palm. It looks like more than a few years have passed (though certain characters (Billy) have aged a little more than others (Baroness, Ha-cha!), so I'm a little curious as to whether this takes place in the past, or like it used to, still 20min in the future. Aside from some odd character designs (Destro really needs to follow Baroness's example and take a couple of fashion tips from his W1 RoC counterpart) I liked the artwork. It wasn't spectacular in any major way, but it seemed to get the job done nicely where needed. |

I liked it but it really seemed forced/rushed.
It almost felt as if Hama only had a day to write it. Do not get me wrong I loved the 80's/90's GI Joe he wrote, but this one just seemed so out of place with where its leading. To be honest it felt more like an alternate universe story then going back to restart the original. That being said if the story arcs as I think it will... I will hate it. Hope I am wrong, but only time will tell.
