Yeah, everybody was rocking a G1 costume (even Destro!). I think for the reintroduction of this book, they decided to give everybody the most iconic look (except for some bizarre reason, the CGs). Hopefully costumes will slowly change over time tom more modern equivalents.

Fabulous issue. Let's face it, if it isn't Larry Hama, it's not 100% G.I.Joe. I mean the real G.I.Joe, the one I've loved since 1982, not just some new toy stuff using the name, which is 90% of what we've gotten since 1994, with the exception of the 25th line. I've read the ddp stuff, and I actually like it. But it was the only continuation of the real deal going, and it should have been hama from the beginning. It's not just that he has the right, it's that he has the know how. So, I'm super excited by this new series. The real g.i.joe comic (as opposed to the numerous new continuity copies) just re-started!

Got it. Read it. Loved it.
Liked the Dr. Venom subplot, liked all the Hama-typical dialog (including the vocabulary-lesson-in-every-issue quotes from Cobra Commander), liked the art (the Crimson Guard a possible exception) liked the interaction between Baroness and Destro "That is not an answer!" liked seeing Zartan disguised and sneaking around and spying on the others LOVED Dr. Mindbender's extra little addition to Billy's BWS session. I LOLed at that one. This issue was not dominated by scowling, brooding characters. It was just good old-fashioned Cobra Fun! My son and I are really looking forward to #156 in July! |

I didn't mind the toy, I mean I was a little kid at the time so the Ninja move gimmick was neat to me.

I forgot to mention Cobra Commanders new flying battle armor... it looks kinda Iron Man like... can't wait to see some people do customs of it. (I might even try).

I didn't like it.
CC is surprised to see that Zartan has sneaked into his room past his what he thought was impenetrable security, but still sleeps in a mask! Why? Zartan's CG disguise is a Hiss Driver uniform... that's just lazy. The characterization of the Broken Star Liberation Army is just a political cheap shot by Hama and totally unnecessary. They are defeated by the American Military in less than 5 minutes, so why would they need Cobra to secure the country (the intended next step) and why Cobra and not GI Joe? CC's "new" battle armor looks stupid and totally uninspired and are we supposed to believe it took Baroness and company 2 days to fly from Trucial Abysmia to Cobra Island in a stolen helicopter? Mindbender's upgrades to Venom's Brainwave scanner change what the device did in the first place, but didn't remove a "Trogan Horse" Venom implanted in it? I'm sorry, that makes absolutely no sense. He then needs Destro's help to remove the TH. They work together! Venom was a back stabber in the first place, they never thought to check the programming out when they changed what it was doing in the first place?! Baroness and Destro have a conversation about her being brainwave scanned, something that apparently needs to be continually redone because it wears off. So people that have been brainwaved, know they've been brainwaved? No wonder it keeps wearing off. Storm Shadow ought to lose the shoulder pads, and the colorist ought to google "Tele Viper" so he can see what they look like. Oh yeah, and where the heck was GI Joe!? |

Exactly. I think it's funny that Hama did in this issue, everything everyone is complaining about in the IDW continuity. (Substitute Cobra for Joe in your last point) It's just he's dumbing it down, rushing it, and making it completely ridiculous, and somehow, that makes it "real Joe". So basically we're saying "real Joe" is heavy handed, poorly handled, plots, and characterization. With ludicrous, and cheesy dialogue? Huh, Maybe Summers did a better job with RoC then we thought. lol
I'm all for brainless entertainment, but I don't get the 1-2 punch of criticizing RoC and then praising Hama's Marvel run. I used to think it was because people were praising their perceptions of what his Marvel run was from memory and hadn't actual gone back and read the stuff. But now with this overwhelming praise for #155.5 I've gotta ask the question; did we read the same book? Do we not want to admit the truth? I mean, IDW's core Joe book, and certainly their Cobra book is more realistic/ adult/ mature story telling than this. Help me out here, what's so great about #155.5 if RoC was so bad, or was it just that RoC wasn't Hama? |

#1. Cobra was always quirky in the Marvel run. So is Hama. So, no surprise CC would sleep in a mask. The CC armor is getting a bad wrap - it makes far more sense than the original CC armor. At least he has the traditional battle helmet with it!
#2. Anyone who is asking "Where is GI Joe?" didn't read issue 155 nor looked at the back cover to see that they will be making an appearance soon. #3. This was a teaser comic. We were spoiled in length and in many plots being laid out. Very few comics have had anywhere near such a free comic story. #4. I agree that IDW's Cobra is more mature. I don't agree that it is any less quirky. Croc Master in Cobra. The whole scene where a teleconference goes on with all the scientific minds of Joe meeting about how to open a box (just to show Matt Trakker!). #5. The story moved in 155.5. A lot. You get a sense that a plot is unfolding quickly. WEEKS passed in this free comic! I'm not sure how much time has unfolded in the main Joe comic. #6. Isn't it a little defensive to be trying to justify the whole IDW line against ONE free comic? #7. Talk about plot lines: We still don't know who Chimera is - and many people will even read that and wonder what I am talking about. Has IDW forgotten that plot line in Origins? Yet, I know that SE can't make cole slaw. IMO, Cobra surprised IDW with its success. Origin has lost its way with these "spotlight" issues. The mainline seems to be going somewhere but it is taking a long time to get there. The classic Joe issue three accomplished EVERYTHING it took MANY issues to accomplish in IDW. Yes, the writing is good, but is much better suited for a novel rather than a comic. Comics are dynamic. Novels can be slower in development. In conclusion, I haven't given up on IDW's other three lines (and look forward to "Hearts and Minds") but it is unfair to compare these comics to a free comic.
