why would they have to write in the seven year gap they could just pick up where it left off seems simple enough to me

From where DDP left off?
Then it wouldn't be Larry Hama returning to ARAH. It would be larry Hama picking up where DDP left off. The whole point of it is that "it's Larry Hama picking up ARAH where he left off".

Best move IMO. DDP would do a good start up and hope that would sell the trade (thus fizzling out at the end). I danced when they lost the licence.
Anyway I could write a book about what I disliked about the comic but it would serve no purpose, they are done and now not even considered to have existed. |

It exists in the minds of the people that read it and enjoyed it.
It's just a split. Timeline A has DDP and Timeline B has the new ARAH. Nothing more, nothing less. It's a story telling decision to not have Hama need to worry about the DDP continuity.

With Hama picking arah back up do anyone think it will kill the main GI Joe's momentum possibly ending it prematurely?
Also if both sell well, wouldnt it be weird to have 2 different versions of GI Joe comics running simaltaneously? Please forgive me if these questions are considered stupid or whatever. Ive never really been a comicbook guy and dont know how most titles handle different continuities. |

It is odd to have different continuities going at the same time. And it does potentially hurt one or the other by splitting the readers.
But IDW must have faith in both lines in order to do it.

I actually really like that they were starting fresh with a new comic joe contimuim. The problem is a lot of fans will choose to follow only one, thus reducing the readership for each. Yes, overall Joe should have about the same readership, but the continuation of a series depends on how each title does, not the brand overall. Case in point is the multiple Star Wars comic series that run at the same time. Despite the massive fan base there (lets not kid ourselves, it dwarfs that of joe), they have a very strict cap on how many different series they can run at the same time, and even with that, there's always 1 or 2 that sell well, while the others barely make enough sales to be kept alive. With the smaller fanbase for Joe, I genuinely worry that splitting the readers on two different series may cause one or possibly both to be cancled. |

I explained this in the other thread but will do so here as well...
If they allowed the DDP to be official with the original ARAH then that puts a limit on what Hama can do. There is now a ceiling to where his stories have to lead. He now would be writing the story of how the Joes and Cobra went from #155 to DDP #1 and what happened in that 7 year gap. Do we really want that? That means we'd know that no one would die (since they were all alive in DDP). We'd know that eventually Duke joins the CIA. We'd know that Snake-Eyes gets Orphelia as an apprentice and that she dies. We'd know that Zartan gets sick. We'd know that Alexander and Armada show up and inject Destro with nanomites. THERE WOULD BE NO SURPRISES!! THERE WOULD BE NO THREAT!! (because we know they all survive until DDP #1) With all that, WHAT WOULD BE THE POINT of having Hama do a new series? I personally like DDP, liked some of the unexpected twists, didn't like the immortal SE but did like the struggling SS. DDP wasn't perfect, but in a very real way, it paved the way for this return.

Yeah, IDW has worried me from the start with the three books and then when they made Cobra ongoing I got even more worried. Adding ARAH and yeah... I don't know if they can keep all of 'em afloat.
