The only thing I buy monthly now is the Hama series 'cuz that's all I ever really wanted even before DD restarted in '01. (Though I abhor having multiple covers. Comic publishers: make a choice and show your books and readers some respect instead of trying to make a buck!) Man, I don't even buy figures anymore unless they're O-ring/vintage. I'm just trying to keep my hobby focussed on the stuff I *really* want instead of buying whatever's thrown at me simply because it claims to be G.I. Joe (Not to mention giving my wallet and storage space a bit of relief too).

I didn't realize comics were dead... Sure, the bubble burst in the '90s but there's still people who collect these, right?
Personally, I don't get them because of the expense and the wait involved in getting a story, month by month. I will buy the occasional TPB - I just like getting an entire story in, rather than having to wait. Probably the same reason I don't tend to watch television very often, but will buy DVD sets of good series.

I no longer buy comics because there's just no easy way to get 'em. The nearest comic book stores are completely out of the way, and when I DO go, I have to deal with employees who think it's their civic duty to act as arrogant and self-important as Jack Black in High Fidelity.

Was watching the CNBC documentary Comic Books Unbound and got interested about the comic crash again and found this article to read: The Comic-Book Apocalypse :: Badmouth
Pretty good (if not long) read, probably a little biased too... but still interesting IMO.

Our we talking about the 90's or now? Because right now its the digital move and lack of a adapting business model by the industry that's slowly killing things now.
And people don't just want their comics digitally, they want them DRM free, tether free, and cloud free. So iTunes and Marvels current model arent cutting it. Distribution points are failing now because they could be made obsolete with a digital medium. So unless someone else out there knows why Atomic Comics just suddenly folded, I blame that on financially overextending the business during a recession while not being able to adapt to take advantage, (somehow) of the new trends. |

The publishers are stuck in the Direct Market mode, which is what really started the death of comics.
Comics need to be on the spinner racks in grocery stores/drug stores/book stores/etc.. Which is how the majority of us first got our comic book fix. They're clinging to the direct market model for digital and it's not going to work.
